The amateur league Schleswig-Holstein was held for the 19th time in the 1965/66 season and formed the substructure of the second-rate Regionalliga Nord until the 1973/74 season. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the second-class Regionalliga Nord, the teams in the last three places had to relegate to the 2nd amateur league.

Compared to the 1964/65 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: Itzehoer SV was up in the Regionalliga Nord, while VfR Neumünster was relegated from the Regionalliga Nord after ten years. The three relegated Borussia Kiel , Gut-Heil Neumünster and TuS Holtenau had left the amateur league and were replaced by the three promoted police SV Kiel (return after 15 years), TSV Schlutup (return after three years) and Husum 18 (return after 14 years) replaced.

Season course

VfR Neumünster secured the championship and thus participation in the promotion round. Schleswig 06 was also allowed to take part in second place. Both missed promotion to the Regionalliga Nord. Since SV Friedrichsort was relegated from the Regionalliga Nord, there were four relegated teams from the amateur league. In the necessary play-off for 12th place, Lägerdorf prevailed against Holstein Segeberg. Holstein Segeberg had to enter the 2nd amateur league after three seasons, DGF Flensborg after two years and Husum 18 after one year. With FC Kilia Kiel, the penultimate founding member of the league was relegated.

    The champions and runners-up of the six seasons of the 2nd amateur league took part in the promotion round. They played in three seasons. The winner of each season rose to the amateur league. In the event of a tie, a playoff was scheduled.
