The Schleswig-Holstein regional league was staged for the 25th time in the 1971/72 season and formed the substructure of the second-class Regionalliga Nord until the 1973/74 season. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the second-class Regionalliga Nord, the teams in the last two places had to relegate to the association league.

Compared to the 1970/71 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: No team was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Regionalliga Nord. The two relegated VfB Lübeck Amateure and Itzehoer SV Amateure had left the national league and were replaced by the two promoted DGF Flensborg (return after five years) and SC Elmenhorst (for the first time in the national league).

Season course

As in the previous year, Rendsburger TSV secured the championship and thus participation in the promotion round. Schleswig 06 was also allowed to take part in second place. Both missed promotion to the Regionalliga Nord. DGF Flensborg had to leave the national league after one season, VfL Oldesloe after 14 seasons.

Eichholzer SV qualified third for the German amateur championship in 1972 . There he first prevailed against FC Rodalben , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against 1. FC Normannia Gmünd .
