The Schleswig-Holstein regional league was played for the 24th time in the 1970/71 season and formed the substructure of the second-rate Regionalliga Nord until the 1973/74 season. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the second-class Regionalliga Nord, the teams in the last two places had to relegate to the association league.

Compared to the 1969/70 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: The Heider SV was up again in the Regionalliga Nord after one season, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Regionalliga Nord. The two relegated FC Holstein Segeberg and TSV Heiligenstedten had left the regional league and were replaced by the three promoted SC Comet Kiel (return after three years), VfB Lübeck Amateure (first in the regional league) and Itzehoer SV Amateure (return after one year).

Season course

The championship and thus participation in the promotion round secured the Rendsburger TSV. TSV Westerland was also allowed to take part in second place. Both missed promotion to the Regionalliga Nord. The amateur teams of VfB Lübeck and Itzehoer SV had to leave the regional league again after one season.

VfB Kiel qualified third for the German amateur championship in 1971 . There he was eliminated in the second round against Sterkrade 06/07 .
