The Schleswig-Holstein Association League was held for the 42nd time in the 1988/89 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last three places had to relegate to the national league.

Compared to the 1987/88 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: TuS Hoisdorf was in the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The three relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the four newly promoted NTSV Strand 08 ( promotion after two years), SV Ellerbek , TSV Kappeln and TSV Büsum (all three for the first time in the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein).

Season course

The championship and participation in the promotion round secured the VfB Lübeck. VfB Kiel was also allowed to take part in second place. Lübeck finished his group in second place behind TuS Esens and Kiel only had to admit defeat to the amateur team of Hamburger SV in his group , which meant that both of them missed the promotion. SV Ellerbek had to leave the association league after one season, Itzehoer SV and 1. FC Phönix Lübeck both had to relegate for the first time from the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein.
