In 2006 barracks 19, 20 and 44-46 were included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Other barracks are also protected as an ensemble as Category B buildings. Furthermore, both individual monuments together form a category A monument ensemble.

history

The Cultybraggan was established around 1941 as a prisoner of war camp for prisoners of the Second World War . In September 1941 the work was not yet completed. Originally intended for Italian prisoners of war with a capacity of 4500 inmates, it was probably never used for this purpose. Instead, it was initially used as a transit camp for German prisoners of war. In May 1944, 785 people were interned there. On Christmas Day 1944 there were 3,988 prisoners of war. Cultybraggan Camp developed into one of two high security camps in the United Kingdom holding ardent supporters of Nazism and high-ranking prisoners who had been classified as dangerous. On December 22, 1944, Wolfgang Rostberg , who was considered a traitor, was murdered there by his fellow prisoners. Five of them were later hanged in Pentonville . In May 1947 the prisoner-of-war camp was closed.

From then on, the facility served as a training camp for the British military. The Cultybraggan Camp originally consisted of 80  Nissen huts , of which 62 were intended for the prisoners. Several huts have been removed over the decades. Around 1960 a training hut was set up to simulate gas attacks. Furthermore, shooting ranges and a training course were added; also an explosives store. A bunker was set up underground in the early 1990s to serve as the regional government headquarters. In 2004 the military use of the facility ended.
