The Schleswig-Holstein Association League was held for the 40th time in the 1986/87 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last three places had to relegate to the national league.

Compared to the 1985/86 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: No team was promoted to the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The two relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the two promoted VfB Kiel (re- promotion after eleven years) and TSV Pansdorf (return after one season).

Season course

The championship and participation in the promotion round secured the VfB Lübeck. TSV Plön was also allowed to take part in second place. Lübeck finished his group in second place behind 1. SC Norderstedt and Plön had to give way to FC Mahndorf as third in his group . Wiker SV had to leave the association league after five years, VfL Kellinghusen after two years and TSV Westerland after 18 seasons.
