The Varena ( proper spelling in capital letters) is a shopping center in the Upper Austrian municipality of Vöcklabruck .

It was opened in August 2010 and is operated by VARENA Betriebsgesellschaft mbH , a subsidiary of SPAR European Shopping Centers . According to its own information, there is space for over 80 shops on 32,000 square meters of sales area, in which around 750 employees work. In 2016, a total of 112 million euros were turned over .

The shopping center is located in the southern part of Vöcklabruck on the border with Regau and is the only shopping center in the Vöcklabruck district . It was built between May 2008 and August 2010 by a consortium of the construction companies Alpine , Dywidag and Strabag . The cost of the project was around 82 million euros.

Transport links are provided via Wiener Straße (B1), which runs right next to the building, and the Vöcklabruck city bus. There are 1,900 parking spaces and a total of eight charging stations available.

Special features of the shopping center are an approx. 130 square meter walk-in map of the region around Vöcklabruck on the ground floor, which was laid out with the largest candy mosaic in the world in August 2012 on the occasion of the second anniversary of the opening , and a climbing wall approx. Ten meters high . The largest stores in the Varena are Interspar , Thalia , MediaMarkt and Kastner & Öhler . A pharmacy has also been relevant since the opening in March 2017 .

The shopping center was particularly criticized in terms of community politics, according to Mayor Herbert Brunsteiner, the frequency of visitors in the Vöcklabruck city center fell by around 20,000 people to 50,000 people per week after the opening, and some shops in the city center, including Thalia and Zillertaler, closed World of traditional costumes , which now have branches in the Varena.
