Joan Ferrés i Curós (born December 21, 1924 in Olot ) is a Catalan sculptor and draftsman from the artist town of Olot. Originally trained as a specialist in religious sculpture, Ferrés quickly developed into a specialist in portraits and sculpture of the human body in general. As such, he created or creates female figures of great aesthetic beauty.

life and work

Joan Ferrés came from a farmhouse. His childhood and youth were difficult and sometimes chaotic against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War . He attended elementary school and high school (Escolapis and Cor de Maria) in Olot.

Joan Ferrés entered the Olot Art School at the age of ten . There he learned from Melcior Domenge , Vicenç Solé Jorba , Martí Casadevall and Bartomeu Mas i Collellmir . Since the age of 14, Ferrés has worked for many years as a model sculptor for religious folk art at companies such as Hostench , Las Artes Religiosas , El Santo Cristo , El Arte de San Rafael and Sacrest in Olot and the surrounding area. From 1968 he worked as a freelance artist for several studios in Olot. From 1972 Ferrés worked for 15 years as a lecturer in drawing and modeling at the art school in Olot. Ferrés has dedicated his whole life to sculpture and art.

In 1950 Ferrés had his first exhibition in the Sala Vayreda in Olot. In 1957, Ferrés had received a state scholarship to participate in the Certamen Nacional d'Arts Plàstiques (National Plastic Arts Competition) in Madrid. In 1960 he took part in the National Exhibition in Barcelona with the work Vella Maternitat (Venerable Motherhood). Even as a young man, Ferrés was intensely involved in the art of nativity scenes. For him, the nativity scene always represented a complete artistic work of art. In the nativity scene museum in Olot there are nativity scenes that Ferrés developed or on which he played a key role. Right from the start he was involved in the Olotensian Fira del Dibuix , in the annual Olot art fair that takes place every autumn, which aims to convey art to circles that are more distant from art. For these engagements he received awards from the Agrupació de Pessebristes d'Olot i La Garrotxa (Association of the Nativity Scene Artists of Olot and the Garrotxa) and from the Fira del Dibuix de Sant Lluc d'Olot (Olot Art Fair). Ferrés was a member of the artist group Cràter d'Art .

In addition to religious sculptures, Ferrés has created a wide range of individual pieces for collections. With such sculptures he took part in numerous exhibitions and competitions. In addition, he also created reliefs and medals for honors and awards. He also worked as a grave sculptor. Many of his works can be found in public spaces throughout Spain and France, including in Olot, the Garrotxa, Estepa (Andalusia), Tordera , Calella , Sant Pol de Mar as well as in Céret and La Palme in southern France.

Rating

As a sculptor, Ferrés must be placed in the line of the classics. He works seriously and consciously in his sculptures, never going an easy or artificial way. His sculptures are characterized by a special agility, lightness and mobility. They are always worked to a very high artistic maturity. Ferrés himself is characterized by an outstanding ability to grasp, analyze and study shapes. Ferrés remained true to his own high artistic standards even in the difficult time of the Franco dictatorship for artists , when in Olot only Josep and Manel Traité and Lluís Curós worked as sculptors.
