Cràter d'Art

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cràter d'Art ( German  Krater der Kunst ) was an association of visual artists and art enthusiasts founded in 1955 in Olot, Catalonia, in the environment of the Olotensian art critic, art organizer and artist Josep Maria Mir i Mas de Xexàs . During the time of the Second Republic , there was a flourishing cultural life in Olot; this had completely collapsed by 1939 after the end of the Spanish Civil War . In 1955, I went back to an old idea from the 1920s and started an open art group with the Cràter d'Art . The group defined itself as a “nest of artists in constant discourse”.

Action of the group

According to the art critic Joan Cortés from La Vanguardia , Cràter d'Art was a productive, highly troubled group that sought and fought for new paths in art. The group met regularly in the basement of the bar L'Estació (bar at the train station, also called Cal Moro in what is now the Pequin district of Olot). Every artist and everyone interested in art was welcome there and could exhibit, present and discuss their works. The group organized lecture evenings or social dinners with an exchange of views on art subjects. Model drawing was also carried out. The meetings also served to exchange information on national and international art topics. At that time, Olot was largely cut off from the great art life. Based on the numerous relationships of Mir i Mas, the group organized exhibitions in Barcelona (1956), Granollers (1956) and Valencia (1957), among others . The group was one of the active supporters of the annual art fair (Fira de Dibuix) held in Olot on October 18th.

The open structure makes it difficult to say exactly who was a member of this group. In any case, the group had about thirty members at its best. The Crater d'Art was from 1955 until the death of Mir in 1968 establish the Olotenser art lives and critical support. After the death of the extremely versatile Josep Maria Mir, the group broke up.
