Manel Traité i Figueras (Spanish also: Manuel Traité i Figueras ; * December 28, 1908 in Olot ; † 1996 ) was a Catalan sculptor and draftsman from the artist town of Olot. His main field of work was Christian sculpture. Manel Traité was the father of the sculptor Josep Traité i Compte .

life and work

Manel Traité was born in Olot in 1908. His parents Antoni Traité i Pujol and Francesca Figueras i Costa worked as a caretaker couple in the El Arte Cristiano company in Olot. Here both Manel and his brother Josep received the impulse to deal with the subject of art as a profession and vocation. Manel attended the Escolapi Fathers' school in Olot. At the age of 13 he became a helper in the figurative art studio of the Olotensian artist Melcior Domenge . At the same time he attended the Escola de Belles Arts in Olot. Here Celestí Devesa and Martí Casadevall were his teachers.

Manel Traité was also a very good football player. He played first with FC Olot, then later with FC Barcelona , first in its third, from 1929 in the first team. Ricardo Zamora , Josep Samitier and Vicenç Piera were team-mates during Traité's time in Barcelona. During this time he attended the Llotja , the art academy in Barcelona. There he perfected his sculpting skills. Following this Barcelona phase, Traité went to San Sebastian for two years with the Olotensian artist Lluís Arbós . The two artists set up a sculptor's studio here.

Returning to Olot, Traité worked for El Arte Cristiano . His artistically outstanding sculptor colleagues Joaquim Claret i Vallès , Toribi Sala and Jaume Murta enabled Traité to ideally grow into the art of sculpture. He later became the company's master sculptor himself. He also made religious sculptures for other companies such as B. the company J. Sacrest . In general, Traité did a lot of commissioned work. For Salvador Dalí and the Museu Dalí in Figueres , he made the giant nose by Mae West , which can be used as an apartment. Together with Toribi Sala he created El Drac del Carme , the dragon from Carmen, and together with Jordi Farjas El Conill , the rabbit, both great popular figures of Olot. These figures dance in processions during festivities in the city. Traité played football on the El Arte Cristiano company team until the 1960s .

1973 Traité retired. From an artistic point of view, this time became a "retirement". During this time, Traité created numerous works of art in public spaces. Inspired by Alonso Cano , he created the Puríssima , a statue of the Mother of God, as well as other sculptures and nude models. In 1980 he exhibited in a critically acclaimed exhibition in Olot. In 1983, as part of Albert Rosa's project , Traité created the three dance couples for the Sardana monument in Calella, who dance the sardana high on the pedestal of the monument. In 1990 he created the allegory for the painters in Olot. Traité made numerous reliefs for bells. These were then cast at Barberí in Olot.

Traité had been involved as a crib artist since his youth. For this he was honored in 1980 by the Olotens Association of Nativity Artists. In 1994 he received the Medal of Honor of the City of Olot. He also received the Carta de Mestre Artesà , the letter of honor as master of the arts, from the Generalitat de Catalunya . Traité achieved extraordinary perfection in all of his sculptures.

post mortem

In July 2006, the Traité family loaned all of the artist's works to the Museu de la Lava in Santa Pau . The work of Manel Traité could be viewed here until the museum closed.

Private

Manel Traité was married to Neus Compte i Planagumà. The couple had two children, Antònia and Josep. Josep Traité has become a well-known sculptor himself.
