Jordi Farjas i Darnés

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jordi Farjas i Darnés , or Jordi Farjas for short , (* 1928 in Olot ; † June 29, 2008 ibid) was a Catalan painter, draftsman, sculptor and nativity scene artist who was in the tradition of the Olot School . As a painter he went through a cubist and a pointillist phase. City landscapes were his preferred subject. Here he took a special artistic look at his hometown Olot. Farjas thus offers an important reference point for painting in and by Olot. Farjas always remained true to figurative painting. His paintings are characterized by the exceptional placement of objects and figures in the overall composition.

life and work

Jordi Farjas was born in 1928 as the third child in a working-class family in Olot. He graduated from Malagrida primary school there. In 1942 he took up his first employment in the Olotens arts and crafts factory "El Arte Cristiano", where he learned the arts and crafts of the sculptor and crib maker. At the same time he learned sculpture from Joaquim Claret and Manel Traiter . From 1939 he attended the art school of Olot (Escola de Belles Arts d'Olot) for ten years . His teachers here were Martí Casadevall , Pere Gussinyé , Ramon Barnadas and Melcior Domenge . He learned perspective and scenography from Bartomeu Mas i Collellmir . Farjas was strongly influenced in his painterly development by Josep Pujol . In 1958 he took part in a course in fresco painting with Miquel Farré in Olot, in 1960 in a competition for fine arts in the drawing section in Madrid. In 1951 his uncle Damià died. Jordi Farjas and his siblings took over the management of the family café Europe on Plaça Major in Olot from their uncle. In 1965 he married. Farjas mainly took on the administrative and accounting tasks for the café. Despite these tasks, he never gave up his artistic activities. From 1974 he devoted himself entirely to painting. He was often seen with his easel in Olot until he fell ill in 1994 in a way that made his artistic work impossible. Jordi Farjas died of his illness on June 29, 2008 in Olot.

Farjas has received numerous national and international awards in the course of his artistic life. He took part in various competitions. In 1960 he was invited to take part in the national exhibition “Belles Arts de Barcelona”. From the age of 16 he exhibited his pictures in group exhibitions (Sala Vayreda, Olot 1944) and later in solo exhibitions in Olot (from 1952 to 1990), Barcelona (from 1947 to 1982), in Zurich (1977) and in other Catalan cities out. Between 1957 and 1965 he realized six frescoes in different buildings in and around Olot.

legacy

Domènec Moli describes the relationship between the artists Josep Pujol and Jordi Farjas: Pujol was a regular customer in Farjas Café Europa. There the two painters talked for hours about art and painting. Domenec Moli comes to the conclusion: Jordi Farjas follows the art of Josep Pujol with his own personality in an extremely free, creative and absolutely new way. Works by Jordi Farjas can be found in the Garrotxa Museum (Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa) in Olot, the Girona Art Museum (Museu d'Art de Girona) and the Museum of Modern Art Barcelona (Museu d'Art Modern de Barcelona). Three nativity scenes modeled by Jordi Farjas can be found in the Olot Nativity Scene Museum (Museu Pessebrístic d'Olot).
