Melcior Domenge i Antiga (born May 10, 1871 in Olot ; † 1939 ibid) was a Catalan painter and nativity scene artist who was in the tradition of the Olot School .

career

He received his artistic and painting training at the Olot Art Academy . Here, as well as at the Llotja in Barcelona, he later worked as a lecturer. Domenge was considered the model student of Joaquim Vayreda . He was the one who spread art in the spirit of Joaquim Vayreda. As a student he often prepared the works of Vayreda. At the age of 18 he already had individual exhibitions in Barcelona.

He painted many portraits and often religious subjects. The latter is exemplified by the work “Bon Pastor” (“The Good Shepherd”) in the Chapel of the Capuchins of Olot. Above all, Melcior Domenge was a landscape painter. As such he appeared more synthetic than his master; he was an opponent of everything that spoiled the impression of nature. Many pictures deal with the backlight of the approaching morning. In the color scheme, he often combined a greenish gold with reddish purple tones. In this context, art experts speak of the "Acord Domenge", the Domengeschen gathering. Domenges' work is well represented in the Garrotxa Museum in Olot.
