Herbert von Denffer
Herbert Julius von Denffer (born June 24, 1907 in Narva ; † 1988 ) came from the old Courland noble family of those von Denffer . He was a German-Baltic actuary and headed a group of cryptanalysts in the Army High Command (OKH) during World War II .
Life
In 1935 he was at Adolf Hammerstein at the Humboldt University of Berlin with his dissertation "On Bernstein's theory of partial differential equations of second order of elliptic type" to the doctor of philosophy (phil Dr.) PhD . The co-referee was Ludwig Bieberbach .
During the Second World War he worked as a cryptanalyst in Inspection 7 Group VI (OKH / In 7 / VI), i.e. the deciphering group in the OKH, based on Matthäikirchplatz, not far from the Bendler block in Berlin. First, in the rank of sergeant ( Sergeant ) he was with effect from 1 March 1943, Lieutenant promoted. From April 13, 1943, he headed the newly founded department F (research) within OKH / In 7 / VI . His deputy there was Uffz. Willi Rinow . His group dealt with checking the security of its own encryption methods , in particular the rotor cipher machine Enigma , against unauthorized deciphering (defensive cryptology ) as well as with the acquisition of information and, if possible, the breaking of encrypted foreign messages and methods (offensive cryptology). This included the machine B-211 , a further developed B-21 by the Swede Boris Hagelin .
After the war he worked for the Munich Reinsurance Company .
