Inspection 7 Group VI

The inspection 7 Group VI (short: In 7 / VI ), formally known as " Chief of Army Armaments and Commander of the Reserve Army / inspection  7 / Group VI" (in short: "Boss H Rüst u BdE / In 7 / VI") was, before and during the Second World War the cryptanalytical group of the High Command of the Army (OKH) based on Matthäikirchplatz, not far from the Bendlerblock , in Berlin. Organizationally, it was in the General Army Office (AHA). Also known as OKH / In 7 / VI or OKH / Chi for short , it represented a counterpart to OKW / Chi , i.e. the encryption department of the High Command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) or the so-called B-Dienst of the Kriegsmarine , the Research Office (FA) the Luftwaffe , the cipher service Pers Z of the Foreign Office and the Office VI E in the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) .

Group VI within Inspection 7 was formed in January 1941 and took over the tasks of the former Group IV (In 7 / IV Referat 4). In March 1941, In 7 / VI had a staff of almost 120 employees and was divided into sections as follows :

  • Section 1 General Cryptanalysis, Head Friedrich Steinberg, Deputy Hans Pietsch
  • Section 2 English, Head of Ob.Insp. Ernst Liedtke
  • Section 3 French, Head of Ob.Insp. Hans Wolfgang Kühn
  • Unit 4 Italian, Head of Hptm. Fiala
  • Unit 5 Russian, headed by Max Bleschke
  • Section 6 Balkans, Head of Reg.Rat. Rudolf Bailovic
  • Section 7 Security of own procedures, head: Carl Boehm , deputy Hans Pietsch (head from April 1941 after Boehm left)
  • Section 8 Supervision of own procedures, Head of Obltn. Stones
  • Section 9 Hollerith machines , Head of Kv.Rat. Walter Schenke

In the autumn of 1943, In 7 Group VI was renamed OKH / AHA / AgN / NA with the meaning "High Command of the Army / General Army Office / Office Group News / Intelligence". Towards the end of the war, in October 1944, intelligence reconnaissance of the German army was restructured and merged. This is how the office of the General of Intelligence (GdNA) came into being.
