Lluís Curós i Morató (* 1886 in Olot ; † 1979 ibid) was a Catalan sculptor from the artist town of Olot.

life and work

Curós was a student of Josep Berga i Boix , Iu Pascual and Martí Casadevall at the Escola de Belles Arts in Olot. Since he never broke off contact with his Escola, he also got to know Bartomeu Mas i Collellmir and Joan Vilà i Moncau as art teachers. First he worked as a sculptor for the company El Arte Christiano in Olot and later for other companies that produced religious folk art; that was how he made a living. In 1910 he set up a workshop with the sculptor Arseni Bertran . In 1915 he met the sculptor Josep Clarà . In 1918 he was a co-founder of the Sant Bruno Academy in his sculpting workshop. In 1930 Curós took part in the joint exhibition Joventut (Youth) of the entire province in Figueres . In the same year he created a three meter high sculpture for the cathedral in Panama City . In 1935 he returned to the Escola , the art academy of Olot, for study purposes . Here he studied with Pere Créixams , Francesc Labarta , Xavier Nogués , Emili Bosch i Roger and Manuel Humbert .

In 1942, at the almost retirement age of 56, Curós made the decision to go completely independent artistically. He knew real art has no age. Real art requires constant openness and constant learning. He lived these attitudes all his life in and with the school of Olot. He now set up his own artist's studio on Carrer Macarnau in Olot. He overcame his fear that he was not yet sufficiently developed for the public art world and stepped public with his new works as a mature artist. From now on he lived his love for tone and artistic volume. He now created aesthetically valuable, small-format, mostly female sculptures of great expressiveness, sensitivity and humanity. The preferred materials are terracotta and cast bronze . His works represent an energetic sculptural art that is somewhere between the Hellenism and the humanism of Manolo Martínez Hugué . With this art, Curós achieved the greatest response and recognition at exhibitions in Olot and Barcelona.

Curós passed these artistic discoveries on to his exceptional student Rosa Serra . She picked up the impulses and carried them on in a completely independent artistic path. They resulted in a completely new Catalan sculpture. At the same time, Rosa Serra became a kind of guardian angel for the "old" Curós, who enabled him to work highly creatively in old age.

In addition to the small sculptures, Curós created busts of notable personalities such as Joaquim Danés , Josep Pla , Nolasc del Molar and Alexander Fleming . These works of art in public space indicate the high esteem this artist acquired in later life. The Garrotxa Museum in Olot shows many of his mostly small-format sculptures.
