Josep Berga i Boix

Josep Berga i Boix (born October 25, 1837 in La Pinya , Garrotxa , Catalonia , † October 8, 1914 in Olot ) was a Catalan landscape painter of realism , art teacher and writer. Along with Joaquim Vayreda, he is considered to be the co-founder of the landscape painting school in Olot . His son was the painter Josep Berga i Boada .

In 1869, Berga was initially refused to manage the newly founded L'Escola Menor de Belles Arts d'Olot because of his Carist attitudes . During this time he initially headed a private art academy for painting, which was built up with painters from the School of Olot. In 1877 he was appointed head of the public art school because of his outstanding pedagogical skills.

His aesthetic differed from that of Joaquim Vayreda. This was due to Berga's preference for motifs from the mountains (especially the Puigsacalm above Olot), whose glistening light he depicted in an almost impressionistically simplistic way - contrary to Vayreda's mystical concepts. His rather small-format works offer an honest, sometimes naive view of the landscape around Olot.

As a writer, he wrote home novels such as L'estudiant de la Garrotxa (1895, The Student from the Garrotxa ), Clareta, mar de brutícia (1906, Clareta and the great dirt ) as well as fairy tales and short stories. He published articles in cultural magazines such as La Renaixença and Il·lustració Catalana .

Many of his works can be seen in the Garrotxa Museum in Olot.
