Cascata del Toce (German: Tosafall, Tosafälle, Walser German : Früttfall ) is a waterfall of the Toce River (German and Piedmontese: Tosa ) in the municipality of Formazza in Piedmont , Italy . With a drop of 143 m, it is one of the highest waterfalls in the Alpine region.
Below the village of La Frua (Walser German: Frütt ) it falls over a valley step down into Val Formazza (German: Pomatt ). It is located at an altitude of 1,675 m above sea level. Its width at the foot is 60 m. The waterfall is mostly dry because the water is diverted to generate electrical energy. For tourist purposes, the water only flows over the waterfall on certain days and at certain times from June to September. The times can be found on the Val Formazza Tourist Office website.
The historic inn “Albergo Cascata Toce” from 1863 is located on the edge of the slope of the waterfall. From there there is a very nice view of the Formazza valley and the upper part of the waterfall. The ornithologist Hans Graf von Berlepsch described the waterfall as the most beautiful and mightiest in the entire Alpine region.
On May 30, 2003, the Toce waterfall was the destination of the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia . The stage winner was the later tour winner Gilberto Simoni .
