Formazza ( Walser German Púmatt, German Pomatt ) is a municipality in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB), Piedmont region .

geography

Formazza includes the Val Formazza (Eng. Pomatt), the uppermost section of the valley formed by the River Toce (Walser German Riis ). The continuation of the Val Formazza to Domodossola is called Valle Antigorio .

Via the Griespass (border crossing to Switzerland at 2479  m above sea level ) there is a connection to the Nufenenpass , from where both Goms in the canton of Valais and Val Bedretto in the canton of Ticino can be reached; The latter can also be reached directly over the San Giacomo Pass . The valley used to be an important traffic route, as a mule track led from the Valais over the Griespass to Lombardy .

The municipality with an area of 131 km² comprises nine hamlets inhabited all year round: San Rocco, Il Passo, Foppiano (wdt. Unnrum Schtaldä, dt. Unterstalden ), Fondovalle (wdt. Schtafulwald, dt. Stafelwald ), Chiesa (wdt. In där Mattu , German Andermatten ), San Michele (wdt. Tuffald, German. Tuffwald ), Valdo (wdt. and German. Forest ), Ponte (wdt. Zum Schtäg, German. Zumsteg ), Brendo (wdt. Brendu, German. Brennen ) , Grovella (wdt. Gurfälu, dt. Gurfelen ) and Canza (wdt. Früduwald, dt. Frut [t] wald ).

The neighboring Italian municipalities are Baceno and Premia . The municipality also borders the Swiss cantons of Valais (west) and Ticino (east); the only German-speaking village in Ticino, Bosco / Gurin , is connected to the Pomatt via the Gurin Furggu . Formazza is the northernmost municipality in Piedmont.

History and language

In the Middle Ages, the Val Formazza was settled by Walsers who came from Goms in Switzerland and were thus German-speaking. The High Alemannic dialect ( Walser German ), which is still spoken today by the older generation in particular , the construction of the houses and numerous German field names bear witness to this settlement.

The Pomatt was occupied twice by the Valais and was a common rule of the Old Confederation . After the Battle of Marignano in 1515, the Swiss had the valley to the time of France dominated Duchy of Milan cede.

From 1988 onwards , Anna Maria Bacher created important dialect literature in German local dialect. Three of her poems were set to music by the Swiss composer Heinz Holliger .
