Antrona Schieranco ( Lombard Antruna-S'ceranch ) is a municipality in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .

geography

The municipality is located in the Antrona Valley . The municipality covers an area of 100  km² . The fractions of San Pietro, Pra Bernardo Inferiore and Superiore, Schieranco, Locasca, Rovesca and Antronapiana belong to Antrona Schieranco . The neighboring communities are Bognanco , Calasca-Castiglione , Ceppo Morelli , Montescheno , Vanzone con San Carlo and Viganella .

history

The presence of human settlements in Antrona Piana is documented from the 13th and 14th centuries, but there is evidence of older origins. The special location on the old road that connected the Ossola Valley with the Saas Valley in the neighboring Valais made Antrona Piana an important center until 1700, when the population reached 1,650 inhabitants.

A landslide in 1642 also had an enormous impact on the landscape. The delegation took place from the side of Monte Pozzuoli and overwhelmed part of the village with a jump of a thousand meters. Some chronicles of the time estimated 95 victims, others 150; the buried houses were about forty.

Attractions

  • Parish church of San Lorenzo was built shortly after the landslide of July 27, 1642 as an extension of the small oratory of San Rocco, which was spared from the landslide. The building consists of three naves separated by columns and covered by vaulted ceilings. The delicate vestibule, on which the date of completion of the temple, 1685, is engraved, contrasts with the austerity of the facade. Next to the church is the bell tower, construction of which began in 1653 and ended in 1660. Inside, the gilded wooden altars are the work of the sculptor and carver Giulio Guaglio from Laino .
  • Oratory of San Bernardo, built around 1650 in Cheggio, was decorated by sculptor Giulio Guaglio between 1702 and 1703.
  • Oratory of San Gottardo was built in 1627 in the hamlet of Rovesca, the facade shows a huge portrait of Christophorus from 1669, in the church the altar by Albasino da Vanzone is from 1740.
  • Church of San Pietro in the hamlet of the same name, the main village of the oppressed municipality of Schieranco. This building was also the result of a catastrophic event: in 1640 a flood destroyed the previous church, which forced the residents to build a new building. The Church of San Pietro was completed in 1662. The facade consists of a rose window and a Romanesque portal, the work of the architect Giannino Ferrini. The perimeter of the churchyard is flanked by the chapels of the Stations of the Cross with representations from the 19th century.

Ventures

The valley's economy is mainly pastoral; the only industrial activity is hydropower. The diversity of the landscape and the presence of lakes of natural and artificial origin make the place an interesting naturalistic destination.

The gold and silver mines

In the past, the fame of the municipality was linked to the existence of gold and silver mines, which were exploited in the second half of the 18th century and documented by the economist Melchiorre Gioja in his statistical-economic studies of the Agogna department. The mines remained in operation until 1946 and were managed by English and French companies under concessions from the end of the 19th century.
