Melchiorre Gioja
Melchiorre Gioja (born September 20, 1767 in Piacenza , † January 2, 1829 in Milan ) was an Italian philosopher and economist.
Life
Gioja held the position of director of the Statistical Bureau in Milan under French rule from 1799, but was removed from this position in 1820 because of his political opposition. He died in 1829.

In addition to a large number of philosophical writings, of which the Ideologia (Mail. 1822, 2 vol.) Is to be emphasized, he wrote: Filosofia statistica (das. 1822, 4 vol.), Then in particular Nuovo prospetto delle scienze economiche (das. 1815-19 , 6 vols.). In these he made clear the importance of statistics for history and economics and is therefore also referred to as one of the founders of moral statistics .
In questions of ethics Gioja largely followed Jeremy Bentham and his treatise Del merito e delle recompense (1818) gives a clear and systematic view of social ethics based on utilitarian principles.
