The Sky Wheel [ skaɪ wiːl ] is the prototype of the roller coaster type X-Car-Coaster from the manufacturer Maurer AG in the Allgäu Skyline Park in Bad Wörishofen .
The specialty of this roller coaster type are the cars, the so-called X-Cars. A wide lap bar in combination with the specially shaped seat enables overhead rides without a shoulder bar. The system is also designed in such a way that the roller coaster can be modularly expanded with additional driving elements if necessary.
The Sky Wheel consists of a 46-meter-high upright ring-like track, which is supported on one side by a tower that also serves as a lift hill . The train, which consists of two cars for six people each, is transported up the elevator from the station by a chain hoist. The train is pulled vertically upwards until it passes into the overhead position at the top of the elevator and the elevator disengages. The type of elevator is called the Humpty Bump Lift by the manufacturer . This is followed by a 360 ° turn ( heartline roll ) from overhead to overhead, followed by a vertical descent through the station. The train shoots vertically up the lift and is braked by gravity.
Now it races backwards into the heartline roll, where it is braked again by gravity. Now the train is moving forward again through the station and is caught by the brakes halfway up. From there, a second forward journey begins. Then the train is braked at the lift and slowly reversed back to the station.
The Sky Wheel is described by the operators as the "highest overhead roller coaster in Europe". The maximum acceleration of the Sky Wheels is 5 g .
Awards
The manufacturer Maurer and the operator Allgäu Skyline Park were awarded the “FKF-Award 2005” novelty prize from the Freundeskreis Kirmes und Freizeitparks eV for the roller coaster in 2006.
