The Freundeskreis Kirmes und Freizeitparks e. V. ( FKF ) is the association of fairground and amusement park enthusiasts with the largest number of members in German-speaking countries. The association was founded on December 6, 1997 as Freundeskreis Freizeitparks e. V. founded by seven people on the Hamburg Winter Cathedral , currently the number of members is over 1,200 people, amusement parks and manufacturing companies (as of January 2020). In addition to joint visits to fairgrounds and amusement parks, the aims of the association are above all to "document and promote culture and the traditional customs of folk festivals and amusement parks".
General
The association is internationally active; In addition to Germany, the members also come from Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Various companies, such as manufacturers of amusement systems, showmen and amusement parks, are also represented as members of the FKF.
The club magazine " Park + Ride " is published by the FKF , in which club members report on topics from the park and fairground sector. In addition to reports from club life, this also includes technically detailed descriptions of rides and historical backgrounds.
Every year some meetings and events are organized in theme parks and on fairgrounds, some of them regularly for many years. Since 2001 the association has been organizing the “European Fanday” together with Movie Park Germany , in which amusement park fans from all over Europe are invited to take part. In 2009 almost 300 people took part. Something similar has been organized since 2008 at the Cranger Kirmes and in 2013 for the first time at the All Saints' Fair in Soest . Furthermore, the association has been taking bus and air trips abroad for several days since 2004. The trips have so far led to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Austria, Sweden and Hungary as well as four two-week round trips through different states of the USA. About 50 members took part in each of these trips.
At the events, emphasis is placed on taking a look at the historical, technical and organizational background in addition to the entertainment aspect. For this reason, technical tours and discussions with park managers or showmen are often organized. Furthermore, several factory tours of manufacturers of amusement systems and construction site visits were carried out.
Since 2002, the association has also been regularly represented with a stand at the Interschau trade fair , supported by the German Schaustellerbund . Since 2007 the FKF has been providing information as part of the historical fair of the Historical Society of German Showmen in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum . In 2012, the first time there was a trade fair appearance at the Euro Attractions Show in Berlin organized by the IAAPA . In 2014 the association became a member of the IAAPA itself. The association has been organizing the annual FKF convention since 2015 . As part of an event in September 2016, the FKF board presented the attraction park Slagharen with the second plaque in memory of Thunder Loop .
FKF Award
Since 2004, the association has been awarding the "FKF Award" each year for three new products from the previous year. The award was given without categories until 2018. Since the 2018 vintage, a prize has been awarded in each of the categories “roller coaster”, “leisure park (stationary)” and “fun fair (transportable)”. For each award winner there is an individual justification, which a corresponding working group generates from the members' opinions. A relational procedure (similar to a Condorcet method ) is used for voting among all members of the association . The price is geographically limited to the European continent.

---|---|---|---|
2003 | Liseberg for Balder | Sweden | Until 1987 Liseberg offered its visitors the experience of a classic wooden roller coaster . This year, with Balder, there was the rapid new edition in the most modern form. The technology of Colossos , the wooden roller coaster in Heidepark, was taken and a wild rail junction was created in which the steepest downhill slope of all wooden roller coasters in the world up to that point is hidden right at the beginning of the journey. |
Six Flags Belgium (today: Walibi Belgium ) for Challenge of Tutankhamen | Belgium | Challenge of Tutankhamon offers visitors a coherent themed ride that invites them to multiple rides thanks to its interactivity. The real innovation, at least for Central Europe, lies in the railless transport system, which is able to choose different routes depending on the accuracy of the passengers. | |
Bonbonland and Gerstlauer for Vild Svinet | Denmark | With Vild Svinet, not only the original Bonbonland amusement park, which was previously purely family oriented, has broken new ground, but also the manufacturer Gerstlauer. Of course, the first descent, which was the first ever with a gradient of over 90 °, is particularly worth mentioning. But also the other technology and traditionally the unusual design in Bonbonland know how to convince. | |
2004 | Toverland and Vekoma for Booster Bike | Netherlands | In November 2003 Vekoma presented a new kind of roller coaster concept. Shortly afterwards, the next summer, it was realized and was available to visitors to the up-and-coming Toverland. Thanks to the innovations, they can now experience the ride on a motorcycle with all its accelerations, including the right sound. |
Fårup summer land for falcons | Denmark | Fårup Sommerland had to fight for a wooden roller coaster for twelve years. Bad dollar exchange rates and especially official orders have repeatedly made the project fail. But the park never thought of giving up and since the 2004 season has been presenting a wooden roller coaster that has been beautifully integrated into the landscape and shows how spectacular classic family attractions can be. | |
Klotten wildlife and leisure park for Klotticoasters | Germany | Until recently, the Klotten wildlife and leisure park was just a small regional wildlife and leisure park, like many others. With the construction of the Klotticoaster, he stepped into a different league and the effect will be further strengthened by the extensions that have already been planned. Such foresight, not planning an attraction alone, but tackling a large expansion concept, is remarkable for a park of this size. | |
2005 | Skyline Park and Maurer Söhne GmbH & Co. KG for Sky Wheel | Germany | The Skyline Park in Bad Wörrishofen presented another world first in 2005. The new coaster vehicle from Maurer Söhne GmbH & Co. KG in connection with the innovative route of the Skywheel offers unprecedented perspectives from a roller coaster chaise such as a lift that ends in a rollover. Another reason for the award is the ability to easily expand the runway. |
Fort Fun Abenteuerland and Josef Wiegand GmbH & Co KG for Trapper Silber | Germany | The Alpine Coaster is an excellent replacement for the two dismantled summer toboggan runs . With an innovative layout, helices and many jumps as well as an appealing embedding in the landscape, the Fort Fun Adventure Land has created a very good family attraction that is highly reliable and offers a lot of driving fun. | |
Toverland and Metallbau Emmeln GmbH & Co KG for Twist & Turn | Netherlands | A scenic drive that offers thrills, but can also be quiet, has the right size for a large indoor play park, is inexpensive to operate, and is interactive and unique: that is Twist & Turn in Toverland Sevenum, which celebrated its premiere in 2005 . A lively but at the same time pleasant driving style makes Twist & Turn extremely suitable for all age groups and carousel preferences. | |
2006 | Disneyland Park Paris for Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast | France | With Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast, Disney is finally presenting one of the most interactive themed rides currently available in Europe. On the mission to save the world from battery-hungry robots and the world's electronic toys, visitors can not only defeat the villain Zurg with laser weapons, but also control the cars themselves. |
Phantasialand for Deep in Africa with Black Mamba | Germany | With the new “Deep in Africa” themed area, Phantasialand has not only staged its new Inverted Coaster in an appealing way, but also created another culturally rich area in the park. With great attention to detail and numerous African artefacts, Phantasialand continues in the style that made it famous through China Town. Back then, too, people knew how to authentically bring the atmosphere of a distant culture closer to the visitor. The most modern audio technology creates the perfect illusion of having landed in the middle of the jungle. “Deep in Africa” offers visitors much more than just a nice packaging for a roller coaster. | |
Movieland Studios for U571 | Italy | The U571 has offered an almost perfect combination of simulation, effects, show & atmosphere since 2006. Inspired by the submarine film with Jon Bon Jovi , Movieland Studios present a fascinating and extremely wet submarine ride. An excellent, unique and brave simulation with a high level of intensity. | |
2007 | Doppelmayr and Walibi Belgium for Vertigo | Belgium | With the combination of roller coaster and cable car , Doppelmayr presented a completely new concept in Walibi Belgium. The high-rise system impresses with a feeling of flight up to 55 meters above sea level that is not yet known in this form. This is supported by the seats, which are only equipped with lap bars, and the long stretch of road without supports. |
Phantasialand for Talocan | Germany | The European premiere of the Suspended Top Spin took place with Talocan in May 2007 in Phantasialand. Here, not just a new ride was presented, but a perfect staging in an elaborately themed show with fire, water and sound effects. Talocan not only offers an exciting driving experience for the passenger, but also a real eye-catcher for the spectators, embedded between the existing theme worlds Mexico and Deep in Africa. | |
Walt Disney Studios Park Paris for Crush's Coaster | France | The combination of Spinning Coaster and Dark Ride in Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris convincingly combines the unique design of the " Finding Nemo " theme and innovative projection technologies with a roller coaster ride. Different lift speeds in coordination with the story told and the ride through the projected whirlpool create an excellent illusion of being “right in the middle of the action”. | |
2008 | Gerstlauer Amusement Rides for SkyRoller | Germany | Thanks to the SkyRoller wings attached to the individual seats, each passenger can determine their own journey. By skillfully moving the wings, the gondola can be made to flip over to the side or only a rocking movement can be maintained. |
Fårup Sommerland and Gerstlauer for Lynet | Denmark | The new V-shaped seating arrangement of the cars on Gerstlauer's first catapult launch roller coaster offers a better view for those sitting in the back. | |
Djurs Sommerland and Intamin for pirates | Denmark | The new concept of accommodating the properties of the megacoaster on a small footprint with a standardized layout opens up the possibility of implementing such a roller coaster for smaller parks as well. | |
2009 | Europa-Park and Mack Rides for Blue Fire | Germany | Newly developed trains and a smooth rail guide give the first Launch Coaster from Mack the opportunity to open spectacular looping runs to a wide audience. |
Amusement Park Plohn and Great Coasters International for El Toro | Germany | Germany's first wooden roller coaster from Great Coasters International not only stands out because of its rapid ride, but also because of its good integration into the park between existing attractions. | |
Steiger Achterbahn GmbH & Co KG for test track | Germany | After the Euro-Star left , the showmen Meyer-Rosenzweig saw the chance to bring an old, completely overhauled, redesigned and new-equipped double loop from Schwarzkopf to Germany. Germany’s fair landscape has thus been enriched again. | |
2010 | Schwabenpark and ZIERER Karusell- und Spezialmaschinenbau GmbH for Force One | Germany | The Schwabenpark has been enriched with this very beautiful family train, which is also suitable for smaller children (90cm). The track is a lot of fun and has an interesting, varied layout. |
Schleifer for Eva's trip to paradise | Germany | This mountain and valley railway from 1939 was stored in a hall for over 50 years. By chance Toni Schleifer found out about it, acquired the business and in seven years restored the carousel lovingly and with a lot of respect for the original design. It is also noteworthy how the Schleifer family runs the business: It is recommended with a microphone from the old days and all employees and family members are dressed in the appropriate style. A real enrichment of our fairgrounds not only for nostalgic fans, especially for the family audience. | |
Hansa-Park and Gerstlauer Amusement Rides for Fluch von Novgorod | Germany | With the curse of Novgorod, the Hansapark presented a harmonious mixture of an exciting rollercoaster ride and a story from the time of the Hanseatic League . | |
2011 | Phantasialand and 3DBA for mouse au chocolat | Germany | The Phantasialand has a long tradition of themed trips and shows with the interactive mouse au chocolat attraction how the concept is presented in the modern age. Convincing backdrops, already in the queue, and interactive fun invite visitors to make new visits to the Berlin cake factory. |
Gröna Lund and Gravity Group for Twister | Sweden | Gröna Lund is a synonym for lack of space. But that didn't stop the park operators from building a wooden roller coaster . Gravity Group had the right trains for tight curve radii on offer and circled an unbelievable series of small descents and wild curves on the roof of the park's new ghost train . | |
Movie Park Germany and Gerstlauer Amusement Rides for Van Helsing's Factory | Germany | When designing the new product for 2011, Movie Park took the success of the Halloween events to heart as well as the general popularity of the roller coasters. The result is a fully themed rollercoaster ride with a horror theme that doesn't stop at the use of special effects. The combination of the ghost and roller coaster is still a pleasure for the whole family. | |
2012 | Disneyland Paris for Disney Dreams | France | Unique show in Europe with the simultaneous use of fire fountains, water fountains, waterscreen, fireworks and video mapping . |
Fellerhoff for ghost town | Germany | After the premiere last year, the showman family has shown that a rather unknown track can become an absolute magnet for the fair in a very short time. The globally unique figures in a ghost train and the presentation as "wolf in sheep's clothing" with a rather inconspicuous and stale front and high-tech inside are outstanding. | |
Port Aventura and Bolliger & Mabillard for Shambhala | Spain | This year, PortAventura presented the new record holder in terms of height in a European amusement park, attractively packaged and provided with great driving figures . And not only fans are enthusiastic about the great handling characteristics of the B&M coaster. |
- ↑ When it premiered in 2008, the SkyRoller was in the Deutsches Museum in Munich and then moved to the Belantis amusement park near Leipzig . There he runs under the name "Götterflug" to this day.

2013 | Djurs Sommerland and Intamin for Jewels | Denmark | Intamin and Djurs Sommerland have built a real fun machine with Juvelen, which also provides enough thrills as a family-friendly roller coaster through the launch routes. The theming and the layout close to the floor are convincing and ensure a coherent overall concept. |
Adventure park Tripsdrill and Gerstlauer for Karacho | Germany | Karacho is a successful further development of the Euro-Fighter . With its interesting layout and its 4 inversions, the track offers an ingenious driving experience, even on a relatively small area, as well as enough variety and action so that young people and so-called "thrill riders" could also be won over as target groups for the park. | |
Toverland and IMAscore for Magische Vallei | Netherlands | With the Magical Vallei, Toverland has created a new themed area that forms a coherent overall concept and experience, which is why the park is increasingly developing into a full-blown theme park. D'wervelwind inspires with the coherent onboard sound and the integration into the Magical Vallei. The Magische Vallei impresses with its detailed design, the music by IMAscore and the successful selection of ride attractions. | |
2014 | Europa-Park and Mack Rides for Arthur | Germany | In its new themed area based on the films by Luc Besson , Europa-Park offers a ride on an innovative ride system with a combination of elements of a roller coaster and an interactive themed ride. |
Liseberg and Mack Rides for Helix | Sweden | Helix sets new standards as a roller coaster in Europe. With its location on the hill, it is perfectly integrated into the landscape and, contrary to the current trend, offers a long driving experience with many elements. After the breathtaking descent from the station, launch routes, high-speed curves, intense airtime hills and overhead elements alternate and do not allow the passenger to relax. | |
Bayern Park for Thaolon | Germany | The Bayernpark offers an interesting new concept thanks to the combination of vertical and themed drives. | |
2015 | Horror labyrinth NRW | Germany | The horror labyrinth is a walk-in horror show with loving theming and convincing actors. The location in the old colliery building fits perfectly. |
Plohn amusement park and Mack Rides for Miniwah and the Secret of Gold Creek City | Germany | Miniwah is a family-friendly, fully themed powered coaster with which you have to drive several laps to discover all the details. | |
Hansa-Park and Gerstlauer Amusement Rides for Der Schwur des Kärnan | Germany | Even if the theming has not yet been completed, the train is already inspiring with its unusual layout. Kärnan offers a special thrill with the freefall element. | |
2016 | Europa-Park Rust for the themed area Ireland | Germany | The new themed area in Europa Park offers something for the whole family. |
Kolmården for the Wildfire roller coaster | Sweden | Rocky Mountain Construction's first ropeway outside of the US offers a unique experience. Wildfire blends in incredibly beautifully with the landscape of the park with a perfect layout. The train pulls its pace from start to finish. | |
Phantasialand for the Klugheim theme world | Germany | Klugheim is a world-class subject area. The visitor does not stand next to or behind the two roller coasters, but stands in the middle. Taron is fun from front to back, with a great length of the route and with super comfortable and great-looking trains. The launches are crisp and due to the high speed and the many changes of direction, the journey is never boring for a second. Raik is very fast-paced for a family roller coaster and just as nicely embedded in the area. | |
2017 | Slagharen and Gerstlauer Amusement Rides for Gold Rush | Netherlands | In cooperation with Gerstlauer Amusement Rides, Slagharen has created a catapult rollercoaster as a worthy replacement for the Schwarzkopf classic Looping Star . |
Legendia and Vekoma for Lech Coaster | Poland | The oldest amusement park in Poland, which was renamed Legendia in 2017, has made an outstanding investment with the Lech Coaster. | |
Efteling for Symbolica | Netherlands | With Symbolica, Efteling built an outstanding dark ride with interactive elements and several driving routes. | |
2018 | Energylandia for Hyperion | Poland | With this train, Intamin has put Energylandia, which was previously more in the category of "strange things that happened", onto the European, if not global, roller coaster map. The railway is the European record holder for roller coasters with classic lifts and (despite the record) a big hit in front of the gentleman. A further development of the classic Hypercoaster with new exciting elements, floating and ejecting airtime, great curve combinations and a high-speed festival close to the ground at the end. The design is a big step forward for the park and would look great in most parks. |
Movieland Studios for Pangea | Italy | With Pangea, Movieland has once again created one of its typical, unique attractions that is unique. In freely steerable jeeps without guide rails, visitors steer into the dinosaur jungle and past many dangers and adventures on their expedition. Through the skilful use of the natural topography, the attraction takes guests to distant worlds and lets them forget the proximity to the leisure and water park. | |
Patrick Greier for Dr. Archibald | Germany | Patrick Greier brought the concept of the ghost train into the new millennium with his several years of renovation of the old Mack train from the 1970s. The installation of a pre and post show raises the concept of the transportable themed ride to park level, the self-developed VR technology enables the passenger to travel through time that was previously not possible at the fair. The journey leads through a factory to the dinosaurs, through an enchanted forest and of course back to reality. |
Honors
As part of its association activities, the Freundeskreis Kirmes und Freizeitparks honors amusement parks for special achievements at irregular intervals, for example for their commitment to maintaining traditional rides or for milestones in European roller coaster history and the amusement industry. Furthermore, the FKF maintains tree sponsorships with various parks to honor anniversaries or long-term collaborations. The association also awards honorary memberships to pioneering people in the industry, as well as to private individuals for special commitment.

FKF Convention
The FKF Convention, which has been held annually since 2015, offers fans and interested parties, but also non-members of the association, insights into topics from the rollercoaster, amusement park and fairground world. The association puts together the program with a mix of speakers from the fan scene and the association, as well as from the industry. The aim is to network and pass on knowledge and curious stories about the topics that the association deals with. The FKF-Convention takes place - based on the No-Coaster-Convention of the American Coaster Enthusiasts - in the so-called "Off-Season", when most of the amusement parks are closed. The 5th FKF Convention 2019 was sold out after eleven days. As part of this event, the FKF eV announced that they would be leaving Düsseldorf after four years and announced that they would be organizing the 6th FKF Convention 2020 in cooperation with Europa-Park Rust in the associated hotel resort.
