Vekoma Rides Manufacturing BV is one of the leading manufacturers of leisure facilities based in Vlodrop , the Netherlands . Vekoma specializes in particular in the manufacture of roller coasters . As a rule, certain attractions are not made individually for each amusement park, but versions of the same attraction are sold to the respective client.
history
Vekoma was founded in 1926 by Hendrik op het Veld as Veldkoning and initially built agricultural equipment. In the 1950s, the company swung under the leadership of the son Gerard on accessories for mining around and changed the name to Vekoma (from Ve ld co ning Ma chinefabriek). It was not until 1967 that the company entered the entertainment industry with the construction of a Ferris wheel . Vekoma began building roller coasters in the mid-1970s. The first tracks were manufactured under license from the American company Arrow. Vekoma thus acted as Arrow's European subsidiary. Since then, the company has grown into one of the most important players in the industry. In contrast to its competitors, who are generating high sales with their record attractions, especially in the USA , Vekoma has had its largest sales markets in Europe and Asia, particularly since the early 1990s. The reason for this is the significantly lower investment opportunities for amusement parks outside the USA. They therefore often rely on products that are not specially developed for the respective park. This reduces development and production costs and Vekoma can offer complex roller coasters at a low price.
In March 2018, Vekoma was taken over by the Japanese company Sansei Technologies (previously Sansei Yusoki Co., Ltd.), which itself produces rides and roller coasters . Vekoma promises to be able to open up new markets through the takeover. However, nothing will change in terms of name, production and staff.
Well-known roller coaster types
The most famous and best-selling roller coaster is Boomerang . Vekoma was able to sell this roller coaster more than 40 times. The train offers three inversions on a relatively small area of approx. 90 m × 30 m , but they are traversed both forwards and backwards, which means that the passenger is turned upside down six times.
With four deliveries, the Invertigo , the inverted version of the boomerang, in which the drivers drive under the rails and sit opposite each other in pairs , is much less common . There are also four Giant Inverted Boomerang lifts , the 60 m high version of the Invertigo with vertical driveways.
The Suspended Looping Coaster (SLC) from Vekoma is of particular importance in Europe . Thanks to mass production, the first inverted coaster was also able to find its way into Germany in 1998. Vekoma has already been able to sell the SLC over 30 times in total - 23 of them the standard version with a length of 689 m and five inversions, two of which are in Heide-Park and Movie Park in Germany today .
