Suspended Looping Coaster , or SLC for short , is a product name that the Dutch roller coaster manufacturer Vekoma uses for its inverted coaster .

Conceptual content

Translated into German, the term means something like suspended looping roller coaster (coll. Hanging roller coaster) . However, there is no official German translation.

If you take a closer look at the designation for the standard models, you will notice some inconsistencies: On the one hand, SLC-type railways are not actually suspended coasters , as they do not swing noticeably to the sides. On the other hand, a standard SLC does not contain any looping at all , but rather a roll-over , a sidewinder and two inline twists .

Since the standard model is so widespread due to the many deliveries, the abbreviation SLC is sometimes mockingly interpreted as standard looping coaster .

Layout of a Suspended Looping Coaster 689 m standard

Most SLCs are delivered with standardized routing. The most common is the SLC (689 m standard) . The distance of the SLC (787 m Extended) is a little longer in comparison. The SLC (765 m Extended with Helix) has an additional helix in front of the final brake. The SLC (662 m Prototype) , which includes the first delivery El Condor in Walibi World , the Netherlands and T 2 in the USA , also deviates slightly from the standard .

The route of the SLC (Shenlin) is also standardized, but differs completely from that of the SLC (689 m standard) . SLC (Shenlin with Helix) is called the version with an additional helix.

In addition to these “off the shelf” variants, there is also the option of having an SLC Custom manufactured individually. The only representatives of this type are Fly - The Great Nor'Easter and Jubilee Odyssey .

Trains, drives and brakes

Most systems have trains with ten cars for two people each. Only the two prototypes have eight ( El Condor ) and seven ( T 2 ) cars. Also almost all railways have two trains, a few have three and only one railroad has only one train. The passengers are secured with shoulder straps during the journey. Vekoma has announced a new type of train that uses far less massive brackets and thus improves driving comfort.

A chain lift is used to drive the trains to the lift hill .

Classic pneumatically operated shoe brakes are used as brakes . Some newer systems e.g. B. Kumali have eddy current brakes as the final brake .

Suspended Family Coaster

Jimmy Neutron's Atomic Flyer , in Movie Park Germany

With the Suspended Family Coaster , Vekoma also offers a more family-friendly version of the Inverted Coaster. On the one hand, this version is significantly shorter and, on the other hand, it has no inversions . The 342 m long version has been delivered to seven parks since 2001. On March 31, 2007, the first 294 m version, Jimmy Neutron's Atomic Flyer , opened in Movie Park Germany . The shorter system is also the first with modified trains, with seats without shoulder straps. In April 2007 the Swedish Grona Lund in Stockholm , the 400 m long railway Kvasten with "custom" layout opened.

Unlike the SLC, the SFC have a lift hill with a friction wheel drive. Eddy current brakes are used as brakes in the 294 m version . Since there is no block system, the lifts only have one train for 16 (294 m) or 20 people (342 m). According to the manufacturer, people over 110 cm in height are allowed to ride the railways. The TÜV has even approved the German system from 95 cm.
