Big Loop in Heide Park is a looping roller coaster manufacturer's Vekoma , which was opened in 1983 as the first roller coaster in the park.

On the distance of 706 m, the passengers drive through four inversions : two loops and the double corkscrew, which consists of two corkscrews lined up.

Today the train is more of a classic car and can by no means keep up with modern roller coasters. Nevertheless, this roller coaster is something special due to the unusual route (long straight stretch to the entrance to the first loop) and the low speed with which the loops are passed (approx. 60 km / h).

In 2010 Big Loop got new trains, 2011 new block brakes, 2012 a new control unit. From 2011 to 2013 Big Loop was part of the "Transylvania" theme. Since 2014 the railway has been assigned to the "Pirate Bay" theme.

Big Loop layout

After leaving the station, the train first descends a small (2 m) slope, followed by a 180-degree curve and then reaches the chain lift hill, through which it is pulled to a height of 30 m. After the first drop there is a straight stretch followed by two loops. After another 180 degree curve, two corkscrews and a straight piece of rail are driven through. Before the final brake with pneumatic block brakes, the train drives through a helix (Bavarian curve) and reaches the station.

Curiously, it is the straight sections of the route that distinguish the railway from other similar Vekoma Double Loop Corkscrews (e.g. Python in Efteling or Shaman in Gardaland ). The layout was adopted almost one-on-one from Dragon Fyre in Canada's Wonderland . These straight sections were inserted to allow a straight stretch after the corkscrews, on which a block brake was attached, which, if necessary, would have even enabled three-train operation on the short stretch. In the meantime, the brake has been removed, as it was difficult for the employees to send off the trains on time without a train stopping in the braking area in front of the helix. Big Loop originally had two trains with seven cars each for a total of 28 people from Arrow. Since the 2010 season, Heide Park has been operating the train with the Vekoma trains of the Corkscrew roller coaster from Alton Towers , England, which was demolished in 2009 . These trains have six carriages for a total of 24 people. In both the old and the new trains, each car has space for four people (two rows of two people). Since the route is not divided by block sections, only one train can run at a time. The second train can meanwhile be loaded in the station. This enables a maximum capacity of 1200 people per hour, the old trains could travel 1400 people per hour.
