The Heide Park Resort in Soltau ( Lower Saxony ) is the second largest German leisure and theme park with 850,000 m² .

The park is part of the British Merlin Entertainments Group , which includes various leisure facilities such as Alton Towers , Gardaland , Legoland , Sea Life and the Madame Tussauds wax museum . Heide Park's managing directors are Sabrina de Carvalho, Peter Dunn and Matthew Paul Jowett.

history

The Big Loop roller coaster went into operation in 1983

Otto Tiemann originally planned to run Europa-Park together with Franz Mack . A short time later Otto Tiemann died unexpectedly. His son Hans-Jürgen Tiemann took a look at the business practices of Europa-Park and three years later opened his amusement park with mostly the same attractions as Franz Mack.

The site originally belonged to the Heidenhof Wildlife Park. In 1978 the showman family around Hans-Jürgen Tiemann bought the site. The purchase was linked to the contractual condition that the Heidenhof chapel (built in 1350) and the keeping of local animals should be continued. When Heide Park opened on August 19, 1978, its first 2,000 guests were able to visit the six rides Monza Racetrack ( Monza-Piste from 1997 ), Westerneisenbahn (from 1997 Heide-Park Express , vintage car circuit , raft ride , Wichtelhausenbahn ) and the elevated railway (today Panoramabahn ) and attract around 600,000 guests in the first season. In 1979 the first dolphin show took place, for which a year later a large domed roof was built. After the 2008 season, the dolphinarium was closed.

The Heide-Dorf , a detailed replica of typical buildings from the Lüneburg Heath , was inaugurated in 1988 (closed in 2009). A Dutch part of town followed in 1996/97 with a windmill and canals at the other end of the park (closed in 2008 for park visitors; some facades were torn down in 2014 to make room for the fun pool. The outdoor area is now part of the adventure hotel ).

As the park grew, so did the catchment area, with up to two million guests being counted in the 1990s. Until the takeover on December 31, 2001 by the British Tussauds Group , the park was owned by the Tiemann family. Hans-Jürgen Tiemann still has an indirect influence on the park through shares and a position as advisory director at Tussauds Group.

At the beginning of 2007 the Merlin Entertainments Group bought the majority of the shares in the Tussauds Group from Dubai International Capital , which it had taken over in 2005. Two years later, the heather village and a less frequented area of the park closed. In addition, the Dutch part of the city was henceforth only accessible to hotel guests. In 2010 the American themed area finally disappeared.

In 2011 the amusement park was divided into four subject areas. New were the "Land of the Forgotten", "Transylvania" and "Wild Wild West". The division was made to convert the park into a theme park. The topic "Bay of the Skull Pirates" was created in 2010 and was completed in 2012. In mid-2014, the facades in front of the hotel in the Dutch district, which had been closed since 2009, were torn down.

In 2016 the new topic "How to Train Your Dragon - The Island" was opened. On June 28, 2016, the wooden roller coaster “ Colossos ” was closed indefinitely because, as the park later announced, the condition of the rails was worse than expected.

Another attraction with a film license opened in 2017, the interactive dark ride "Ghostbusters 5D: The ultimate ghost hunt". The attraction is the first completely covered themed ride in the park. In the attraction of the manufacturer Triotech, groups of up to eight people go through several scenes in which they have to shoot ghosts on screens. Ghostbusters is housed in the former Hallo Spencer Hall.

In 2018 the next small subject area followed with the "Peppa Pig Land". In addition, the previous subject area "Wild Wild West" was replaced by the new area "Exploria". The reason for this name change was that the theoretically fundamental theme, the Wild West , was practically only visible in "Lucky Land". The "Lucky Land" still exists, but has not been mentioned in the park plans for several years, the attractions located there are the same as the others.

In 2019, the subject areas “Wild Wild West” (also including the “Lucky Land”), “How to Train Your Dragon - The Island” and “Peppa Pig Land” were finally merged into the “Exploria” subject area. The reason for the amalgamation of the individual subject areas into the subject area "Exploria" was based on the fact that the individual subject areas were too small on their own.

On April 19, 2019, the Colossos wooden roller coaster was reopened after extensive renovation and theming work with the addition of the Battle of the Giants .

For the 2020 season, Peppa Pig Land was expanded with a balloon flight from Technical Park.

Latest roller coaster: Flight of the Demons

The Heide Park Resort has a total of 43 rides, the use of which is included in the entrance fee. There is also a go-kart track for children and one for teenagers and adults for a fee. There is also the option of remote control of miniature cars in the form of monster trucks after inserting coins. There is also a playground. A second playground was dismantled, but two days after the start of the 2016 season, a pirate playground was built between the panorama tower and the Wichtelhausenbahn in part of the former heather garden. The park particularly appeals to families with these attractions. From the 2012 season to the 2014 season, “Octopus lives!” Was also a horror cabinet with live frighteners. In the 2015 season it was said “Octopus is alive! Kids ”and was designed for use by children. Neither of the two attractions has been offered since the 2016 season and the building is only used for horror mazes during the Halloween Nights that take place every year in October .

Colossos - Battle of the Giants

One of the main attractions of the park is Colossos - Battle of the Giants , a wooden rollercoaster that opened in 2001 and was the steepest wooden rollercoaster in the world until Balder opened (on December 4, 2003 in Liseberg, Sweden ). Today Colossos is the fifth highest wooden roller coaster in the world. The track lost the title of the world's highest pure wooden roller coaster a few years ago after the steel loop was removed from the Son of Beast roller coaster (Kings Island, USA ). However, the track was dismantled in 2012; so Colossos is actually again the highest pure wooden roller coaster. With a height of 60 meters, Colossos is the highest wooden roller coaster in Europe. On July 28, 2016, the railway was closed for an indefinite period because the rails needed to be renewed. On January 11, 2018, the management announced in a press release that they wanted to reopen Colossos for the 2019 season. The reopening took place on April 19, 2019 under the name Colossos - Battle of the Giants reopened.

Until the winter of 2011/2012, the park had a replica of the Statue of Liberty , which at around 35 meters was around a third of the original size. The statue was opened on July 4, 1986 for the 100th anniversary of the original and exactly 210 years after the American Declaration of Independence . The then US President Ronald Reagan congratulated the inauguration by telegram . The Statue of Liberty was dismantled in the winter of 2011/2012. Its upper half was used as a decoration in the Colossos wooden roller coaster .

Scream

Another attraction is the Scream Gyro-Drop Tower , which was created in 2003 through the renovation of one of the two observation towers. It has a total height of 103 meters, an effective fall height of 71 meters and a top speed of 103 km / h. On the 28 meter long braking section, the gondola is brought to a stop by eddy current brakes . Until the 2019 season, Heide Park advertised Scream with the title of the tallest gyro drop tower in the world.

Desert Race

On May 15, 2007 the Launched Coaster Desert Race was opened, a so-called catapult roller coaster in which the wagons accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.4 seconds. The roller coaster is located in the Land of the Forgotten themed area , surrounded by desert-like decorations.

OCTOPUS

A new roller coaster from the manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M for short) has been announced for April 2011 on the former site of the Dolphinarium and on the Great Lake of the Heide Park Resort. The train called Krake cost 12 million euros and is Germany's first dive coaster . On October 30, 2010, the Mississippi steamer "Peter Pan" was set on fire and sunk as part of a fireworks display to announce the new octopus attraction.

Flight of the demons

On September 1, 2011, the Wildwasserbahn II was closed. Most recently, on October 22nd and 29th, at Halloween Nights 2011, it served as a backdrop for the live shockers and could be ridden once again on these days. At the location of the Wildwasserbahn II, Germany's first Wing Coaster was opened on March 29, 2014 with the flight of demons in the themed area "Transylvania" .

A wooden house in the holiday camp

Holiday Camp

Holiday Camp is the name of the park's own holiday home complex, which was opened at the beginning of May 2005 in order to bind visitors to the park for several days. Building a place to stay is often seen as the first step in creating a holiday resort.

The Holiday Camp itself has been expanded since April 2006 and consists of 81 wooden houses in the Caribbean style with 536 beds, spread over 158 residential units. In addition to sporting activities that are offered in the camp (beach volleyball, children's playground, quad rental), the holiday camp also offers the possibility of an evening barbecue .

Heide Park Adventure Hotel

For the 2015 season, the Hotel Port Royal was converted into the Heide Park Adventure Hotel . The architect Stefan Rimpf built the building in 2006. According to its own information, Heide Park Resort invested 20 million euros in the 680 bed 4-star hotel , which according to the theme is the villa of the adventurer Lord A. Explorus .

Entrance of the 4-star hotel

The hotel has 150 family and 16 comfort rooms, which, depending on the theme, are called magical cabin, pirate room or captain's cabin (36 m²), western room, demon room or Ghostbusters suite. Since the 2018 season, five former pirate rooms, redesigned according to the Peppa Pig theme, have been available to match the new “Peppa Pig Land” theme area.

The hotel also has an à la carte restaurant and a buffet restaurant - Bulls and Bandits and La Tortuga - as well as the Captain Hook bar and a show program for children and adults. Since the 2017 season there have been no more shows in the adventure hotel. Rosi from the pirate show sings on stage while the children go on a treasure hunt with a pirate. Bulls and Bandits and La Tortuga as well as the Captain Hook bar were closed without replacement in 2017.

In 2015, Sultan's fun pool opened due to popular demand . Construction work on this began in mid-2014. For this purpose, the facades of the Dutch part of the city in front of the hotel were torn down.

Bulli Camp

In July 2014 seven VW T2 minibuses were converted into small apartments in the Californian surfer look.
