T'Pau is a British pop band around singer Carol Decker. They had their greatest successes between 1987 and 1991. With their hit China in Your Hand , the group reached number 1 in the British charts in 1987 .
Band history
The band originally consisted of the musicians Carol Decker (born September 10, 1957 in London ), Ronnie Rogers (born March 13, 1959 in Shrewsbury ), Michael Chetwood (born August 26, 1954 in Telford ), Paul Jackson (born August 8 , 1959 in Shrewsbury ) 1961 in Telford), Tim Burgess (born October 6, 1961 in Macclesfield near Manchester ) and Taj Wyzgowski. After the first album, the latter left the band and was replaced by Dean Howard (born May 7, 1961 in Greenwich / London). The band name is borrowed from the Vulcan high priestess of the same name in the TV series Raumschiff Enterprise (2nd season, 1967, played by Celia Lovsky ).
The pieces of the first three studio albums are original compositions, mostly jointly by Carol Decker and Ronnie Rogers.
In the spring of 1987, T'Pau landed their first hit with Heart and Soul . Her most successful track was the song China in Your Hand in the fall of 1987 , which was able to hold the top in Great Britain for five weeks. In the German charts, the song took second place, in Switzerland, as in Great Britain, it reached the top position. The recently released album Bridge of Spies also reached number one on the British charts. In 1988, Valentine was another top ten success in Great Britain.
In autumn 1988 the second LP Rage came out on the market. However, none of the three singles that were extracted from it could place in the top 10.
After the band released their third album The Promise in mid-1991 , which also achieved only average success, the band fell apart. Carol Decker started a solo career shortly thereafter.
In 1998, Decker and other musicians again put together a group called T'Pau. This went on tour as the opening act for Status Quo in Germany and England, but also played as headliner two sold-out concerts in Germany (1998 and 1999 in Frankenberg, North Hesse ). Nowadays, Carol Decker appears with changing musicians as T'Pau, including as part of the British Here and Now concert series, which she brought back to the big stages together with other greats of the 1980s such as Kim Wilde and Belinda Carlisle .
To mark the 25th anniversary of the band, the mother of two and her former bandmate Ron Rogers released a DVD retrospective and demo CD of the songs from their debut album Bridge of Spies in 2011 under the title The Story Behind the Tracks .
