The Tuz Gölü ( Turkish for "salt lake", in ancient Latin known as Lacus Tatta ) is a salt lake in Turkey and the second largest lake in the country after Lake Van . With 32.9% salt it is one of the salty lakes in the world.
It is located in the dry highlands between Ankara , Konya and Aksaray . The salt lake has no runoff and is fed by precipitation (250 mm per year) and groundwater. In the summer months a crystalline layer of salt is created . There are three salt mining factories on the lake. 70% of the salt consumed in Turkey comes from here.
The best view of the lake is from Şereflikoçhisar on the main road from Ankara to Aksaray . Rushes grow on the edge of the lake . Most of the Turkish greater flamingos nest here. With around 500 breeding pairs, this is the second largest colony of Armenian gulls in Turkey.
Depending on the angle of the incident light, the surface of the lake can take on different colors. In recent years there has been a project to store natural gas under the salt lake.
