Justus Frantz

Justus Frantz (born May 18, 1944 in Hohensalza, today Inowrocław ) is a German pianist , conductor and television presenter .

Life

Justus Frantz is a son of the Breslau chief public prosecutor Richard Frantz († approx. January 1944) and Dorothea Sybille (nickname: Dosy) von Goßler (1906-2001), daughter of Alfred von Goßler . After the flight from the Goßler family estate Schätz at the end of the Second World War , the mother and four siblings found accommodation at Gut Tesdorf together with Alfred von Goßler's family . Here he spent the first years of his life.

Frantz began playing the piano when he was ten. His extraordinary talent was recognized and encouraged early on by Professor Eliza Hansen . In 1967, Frantz and Claus Kanngießer won second prize at the ARD international music competition in the duo violoncello and piano, which marked the start of his international career. At the age of 23 he was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation .

In particular, the study in the master classes of Wilhelm Kempff influenced Frantz in his career. His breakthrough into the international top class came in 1970 as a pianist with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Herbert von Karajan . Frantz made his debut concert in the USA in 1975 with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein , with whom he often worked later. He also played under other well-known conductors, including Carlo Maria Giulini , Rudolf Kempe and Bernard Haitink .

In 1986 Frantz became a professor at the Hamburg Academy of Music . The professorship has been suspended for several years. Since it was important to him to open up classical music to as wide an audience as possible , he founded the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in the same year , which quickly developed into a world-class festival with top international artists in castles, barns and manor houses make music. Until 1994 he was its director . He was also a co-founder of the German-Soviet Young Philharmonic in 1989 and in 1995 he was the founder of the Philharmonic of Nations , which is made up of young musicians from various countries. He has been involved in the Rotary Club Hamburg-Wandsbek since 1987 .

Frantz also became known through several television programs of his own, including Achtung, Klassik! ( ZDF ), for which he was awarded several television awards. He brings children closer to classical music in his concerts, workshops and on his CDs. On the CD series Klassik für Kids , he moderates the performance of important composers especially for children.

Justus Frantz has two sons: Christopher Tainton (* 1975) with the pianist Carol Tainton, and Justus Konstantin Frantz (* 2005) with his wife Ksenia Dubrowskaja (* 1980). Justus Frantz was married to Alexandra von Rehlingen until 1990 . His nephew is the pianist Caspar Frantz .

repertoire

Frantz focuses primarily on classical and romantic music . Together with Christoph Eschenbach , he has often performed pieces for four hands and for two pianos. Frantz has dedicated himself in particular to the works of Mozart and Beethoven , which he presented in cyclical performances in several European cities and recorded on various CD recordings.

Awards

In 1989 Justus Frantz was appointed special ambassador to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his work . In 2005 he and the Philharmonic of Nations received the Würth Prize from Jeunesses Musicales Germany .
