Philharmonic of Nations

The Philharmonic of Nations is a symphony orchestra with administrative headquarters in Hamburg , founded by conductor Justus Frantz . It is under the motto "Peace and international understanding" and consists mainly of musicians from Eastern Europe. According to its own statement, the orchestra is financed by donations and grants from the association, without using public funds.

history

The Philharmonic of Nations was founded in 1995 by Justus Frantz as a professional, international orchestra. Since then the orchestra has made numerous appearances and recordings. It is known worldwide and Justus Frantz's musical life's work.

In connection with the bankruptcy of the Philharmonie der Nations Konzertmanagement GmbH , there were investigations against Justus Frantz in 2001 , who rejected any allegations in this connection. As a result of the establishment of the Philharmonie and various sponsoring companies, Justus Frantz apparently ran into economic difficulties. There was a dispute with the development association. In May 2010, Justus Frantz declared that the quarrels with the development association were over and all debts had been paid off.

Today the supporting company is the Philharmonic of Nations GmbH. Beat Fehlmann was Managing Director from 2012 until his move to the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz in 2013 . In August 2013 Robert Hille - previously managing director of the Hamburger Camerata - takes over the office. Christian Lorenz has been running a cultural agency since 2014.

Concert activity

• 1996: Accompaniment of the state visit of the German Federal President to China.
• 1998: Official orchestra of the Operalia , a singing competition by Plácido Domingo .
• 1998: Appearance on "United Nations Day" in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York
• 2000: Performance in the dome of the Berlin Reichstag building as a symbol against right-wing radicalism in Germany
• 2001: Private concert with Pope John Paul II at Castel Gandolfo .
• 2001: Solidarity concert in favor of the victims of September 11th in Hamburg's Michaeliskirche.
• 2002: Concert tour through the Eastern Mediterranean, a. a. Appearance in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw
• 2003: Ceremony in the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt on the occasion of the inclusion of the original manuscripts of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony in the UNESCO World Document Heritage Directory, together with the Kaunas State Choir
• 2006: Opening concert in Sibiu on the occasion of the city's status as European Capital of Culture 2007
• 2012–2015: Various concerts in Germany, including at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Rheingau Music Festival .

Musician

The musicians of the Philharmonic of Nations come from forty nations and five continents.

Musicians up to the age of 35 can apply with a résumé and submission of work samples on CD or video and will be selected based on the quality of their submissions. In addition, there are no audition dates.

The development association

A sponsoring association supports the work of the orchestra u. a. through funding programs for individual musicians. In addition to orchestra leader Justus Frantz as chairman, the board consists of Norman Bach (2nd chairman) and Otto Bernhardt (treasurer) as well as a number of assessors. Another body is the Board of Trustees, which includes Stephan Paxmann as Secretary General, Otto Schily as President and former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt , and Friede Springer as Honorary Chairmen.

According to press reports, the association had 5,000 members in 2000. In 2009, conflicts with the board of directors led to Justus Frantz filing a criminal complaint against two board members of the development association. The allegations were embezzlement of donations as well as defamation and defamation. In return, the board of directors formulated serious allegations against Frantz. As a result, the old board was replaced in March 2010 and Justus Frantz was elected to the board of the friends' association as chairman.

The main sponsor of the orchestra in 2013 is the Würth Group ; Schott AG , the Swiss company Mont Blanc and a champagne mail order company are named as further sponsors .
