Hotel classification in Germany
The hotel classification in Germany is voluntary (as there is a charge for the hotel), is awarded on a scale of one to five hotel stars and is valid for three years.
The standardized hotel classification system Hotelstars Union has been in effect for Germany since January 1st, 2010 . Other European states and associations are involved in the system.
Hotel classification
Stars | designation |
---|---|

First class | |
De Luxe |
Compared to the hotel classifications in other countries , the German system sets relatively high standards. The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) is responsible for the classification of hotels. This is the only industry-wide recognized German classification in Germany.
The problem is that numerous hotels in Germany advertise with stars that were not awarded by DEHOGA. Obviously, this arbitrary self-award of stars is not consistently counteracted.
The addition "Superior" is for companies that clearly exceed the required number of points in their category.
Minimum criteria
These are only selected guidelines. They reflect the most important criteria for hotel classification, but do not represent the entire catalog of criteria. There is a fixed number of points for all equipment features or services. In order to qualify for a star category, a hotel must achieve a certain number of points as well as meet the minimum criteria listed below for each category. In addition to the minimum criteria listed for a category, the minimum criteria for the lower category are also included.

Distribution of hotels in the individual classes
The distribution of hotels in the classes is quite different in the individual federal states . The hotels in the city-states are usually of a higher class than the hotels in the area states such as B. Bavaria or Brandenburg . This can be explained by the fact that business traffic and thus the required service is much higher in cities .
