Page (hotel)

A page in Japan

A page (formerly also a hotel servant ) is often liveried in large, upscale and luxury hotels . In earlier times, the activity as a page was a kind of initial apprenticeship position in the hotel industry, from which the employee specialized in other areas of work in a hotel.

The bellboy or hotel servant is at the bottom of the hierarchy of hotel staff and is subordinate to the porter or the car master . He takes the guest's luggage to the room and, at the end of the stay, back out of the hotel, explains the room facilities to the guest, parks and unloads guest vehicles and runs errands. The page also helps with the operation of the elevator control and informs inquiring guests about the location of an event in the house, gives directions or information about the city. In addition, he supports the building services as needed, for example in the preparation of event rooms.

Even today, page or servant jobs are part of the range of services of a budding hotel and catering specialist , as this job is a classic service job. The occupation of a hotel specialist is a training occupation and, after three years of training, during which a specialization in one of the sub-areas takes place in the last year, leads to a degree with an examination at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In the gaming halls of casinos , bellboys still play an important role in guest service today; while in the casinos the croupiers are responsible for the process at the gaming tables, the bellhops are responsible for the additional player service . In contrast to the past, advancing from bellboy to croupier or even to the management of a casino is hardly possible today. It is an apprenticeship without a regulated job description .
