Scream in the Heide Park Resort near Soltau ( Lower Saxony ) is a gyro drop tower with a total height of 103 m to the top and a drop height of 71 m. The gondola has a diameter of nine meters and offers space for 40 people who are secured with hydraulically locking shoulder straps and additional straps between the legs during the journey.

Scream was created through the renovation of the 1992 Super Gyro Tower 1000 observation tower II of Heide Park, which was carried out by the Intamin company between October 2002 and April 2003 at a cost of 7.5 million euros. The inauguration took place on April 24, 2003.

Heide Park advertises Scream with the title of the highest gyro drop tower in the world, but the Scream Zone , which was built in 1997 in the Kings Island amusement park, has an even higher drop height of 82 meters. The total height to the top, however, is only 91 meters. The Highlander , which opened on April 27, 2019 in Hansa-Park Sierksdorf, is even higher . This has a drop height of 103 meters and a total height of 120 meters, which makes it the world's highest gyro drop tower.

Gondola in the fall

During the ride up, the gondola turns once around the tower counterclockwise. The entire travel distance is 66 m, the fall distance of 40 m is covered in 2.7 to 2.9 s. On the 28 m long braking section, the gondola is brought to a stop using eddy current brakes . The braking blades consist of 18 segments, each 1.5 m long, with one meter remaining in the deepest nacelle position, resulting in a pure braking distance of 26 m. It takes about 5 to 6 seconds from reaching the brake swords to stopping at the station. When braking, peak loads of up to 5 g can occur; after the very abrupt braking , the gondola descends the remaining meters at walking pace into the stopping position.

Technical

The gondola weighs 22.5 t when empty, around 25 t when fully occupied and is equipped with an audio system that is only used in emergencies.

The tower has a diameter of 2.8 m and stands on a foundation 8 m deep and 10 m in diameter that protrudes 2 m from the ground. The mast consists of nine elements, each 9 m long, the lowest being sunk 5 m into the foundation. Above is the 70 t machine house with a cross section of 5 × 5 m and a height of 4 m (with railing 5 m). A 15 m high antenna mast forms the end. With the foundation and antenna, the total height is 103 m.

The station platform is 5 m above the ground, resulting in a maximum ride height of 71 m. The drop of 40 m results as follows: 2.25 m above the end of the brakes to the mounting of the next tower element + 4 × 9 m + 1.75 m above the mounting of the top element.

The tower stands on a mountain that has been artificially created by Heide Park and is about 30 meters high. This makes the tower appear much higher and offers passengers a wide view.

Individual evidence

  1. https://www.heide-park-world.de/de/historie/ehemaliges/fahrgeschaefte/898-aussichtsturm-2
  2. v = 100 / 3.6 m / s; t = 6s; g = 9.81 - this formula cannot be used because there is no uniform deceleration, it depends on the current (constantly changing) speed, the deceleration value does not change evenly (linearly), but also in a quadratic ratio, so the double integral of the equation s = a / 2xt² + v0xt + t0 (converted to a) is necessary.
