history

Until 1978, the Madame Tussauds wax museum was the main area of the company. When it was taken over by S. Pearson and Son (now Pearson PLC ) in 1978 , the Chessington Zoo (now Chessington World of Adventures ) and Warwick Castle were taken over and expanded or renovated in the same year . After some minor investments, Alton Towers was bought in 1990 . From 1995 to 1998, the company also held 40% of the shares in Port Aventura . In the same year (1998) Thorpe Park in south London was bought and the group moved from Pearson to Charterhouse Development Capital . In contrast to the nearby, family-oriented Chessington, Thorpe Park has been expanding into the thrill sector in recent years. Since 2000 the company has also operated the London Eye and in 2001 the German Heide-Park was bought. In 2005 the group was sold to Dubai International Capital for £ 800 million . At the beginning of 2007, the majority of the group was taken over by the Merlin Entertainments Group , which belongs to the US investment company Blackstone Group .
