The oval, tapering front buds are also bare and yellowish brown in color. The leaves are - unusual for willows - almost opposite, opposite or in threes in whorls. The leaves are elliptical to oblong, two to five inches long and one to two inches wide. They have a very short stalk or almost sessile, the base of the leaf is rounded to slightly indented and encompasses the shoot, the leaf ends in a short, attached tip. The leaf margin is whole or finely serrated in the front area of the leaf. The middle leaf vein is brown and hairy on young leaves.

The flowers are grouped in catkins that appear in May before the leaves shoot. There are some leaves below the inflorescence. The bracts are brown to almost black and almost always hairy. The male flowers have two fused stamens , the anthers are red. The female flowers have an elongated-oval, hairy ovary with a short style and a red, two- to four-part stigma . The result is hairy, two to three millimeter large capsule fruits that ripen in June.

distribution

Salix integra is widespread in East Asia: in northern China, in Japan, Korea and Russia ( Primorye region ). It grows on watercourses and in damp meadows.

Systematics and botanical history

Salix integra was described by Carl Peter Thunberg in a publication by Johan Andreas Murrays in 1784 . It was variously viewed as a variety or subspecies of the purple willow ( Salix purpurea ): Salix purpurea var. Multinervis (Franchet & Savatier) Matsumura, Salix purpurea subsp. amplexicaulis (Chaubard) CK cutting.

use

The variety 'Hakuro Nishiki' with pink and white variegated leaves is used as an ornamental wood and is known as the "Harlequin willow". It is usually grafted onto another type of willow and sold as a tall trunk. This variety was introduced in 1979 by Harry van de Laar from Japan.
