A kitten is a mostly male inflorescence on some trees and shrubs . The name goes back to its noticeably soft exterior, which is comparable to soft cat fur. Kittens consist of several inconspicuous individual flowers that grow as a compact cluster or ear . Most of the time kittens hang down from the branch , they are rarely erect. After emptying their pollen , they fall off as a whole. Examples of tree species that develop kittens include poplar , alder , hazel and willow .

The kittens of the Sal willow are known in Bavaria and Austria as palm kittens , as they are traditionally used for palm bushes when moving on Palm Sunday .
