Arthur and the Minimoys (Original title: Arthur et les Minimoys ) is a French feature film directed by Luc Besson from 2006 . The film is a mixture of real film and computer animation . The film opened in German cinemas on January 25, 2007.

action

The main character is a boy named Arthur who lives with his grandmother because his parents are constantly on the move. His grandfather has mysteriously disappeared. In the evening before he goes to sleep, his grandmother often tells him stories from Africa - about the "Bogomatasalei" and the "Minimoys" that his grandfather even knew personally.

Mr. Davido, a real estate agent, wants to take away the house they live in. And there are also many other unpaid bills. Arthur has 48 hours to find his grandfather's rubies that he received from the Bogomatasalei. While the bailiff is already in the house, Arthur finds a plan in his grandfather's room how he can get to the Minimoys. He follows the instructions and notes his grandfather left behind and meets the real Bogomatasalei, tall, African people in tribal clothing and jewelry. In the end, he slips miniaturized through a telescope into the land of the Minimoys, the small, elf-like creatures that populate the garden. But he only has 36 hours to return, since the gate of light then closes again.

As soon as Arthur arrives in the land under the earth, a ceremony takes place in which a sword of power has to be drawn from a stone. Princess Selenia tries in vain and meanwhile armed captors of the evil "M" (Maltazard) attack mosquitoes . So Arthur ends up in the middle of the turbulent dogfights. To get a weapon quickly, Arthur picks up the sword in the stone and pulls it out like King Arthur . The Minimoys immediately celebrate Arthur as a hero .

Together with Princess Selenia and her little, equally red-haired brother Beta, they embark on a journey to defeat Maltazard, who wants to bring the seven kingdoms of the Minimoys under his rule, and at the same time to find Arthur's grandfather. Their path leads them to the surface in Arthur's garden, where they run into some danger. First, they collide with a bumblebee , run into an angry earthworm and float uncontrollably in a nutshell in the water. To spend the night they make themselves comfortable in a poppy flower , but the first 24 hours have already passed. The next day there are dragonfly eggs for breakfast, but also a nasty surprise. Because the bad M steals the irrigation system that Arthur made out of drinking straws to water radishes. In the hands of the evil M, however, they can become a danger for the Minimoys, who cannot tolerate any water. You travel with the straw transporter, arrive in an underground disco bar and have to keep the intrusive disco goers off your neck. The journey continues into the depths of the earth to the palace of the evil M. They part ways out of tactics and Princess Selenia kisses Arthur goodbye. Beta explains to him that, according to Minimoys law, the two are now married.

Selenia meets the evil M, who expects the princess' first kiss to restore his old look. But she has already given her first kiss to Arthur. Meanwhile, he is held prisoner together with Beta and meets his grandfather Archibald there. Selenia is also brought to them and all four have to flee through the tunnel, which the evil M is about to flood. Arthur finds one of his toy cars in the tunnel. This allows them to quickly get to safety from the masses of water. Back at home in the First Kingdom, it is a minute to twelve and Arthur and his grandfather have to hurry to reach the Gate of Light. They reach the surface just in time, where Mr. Davido is waiting to take over the property.

Thanks to his little friend Mino, Arthur can locate the rubies and bring them up. At the same time he destroys the realm of the evil M, who takes flight. Grandfather can now pay his debts with a ruby from the treasure. Mr. Davido tries by force of arms to get all the treasure he was after all the time, but is stopped by the Bogomatasalei and handed over to the police. Then Arthur brings Mino back to the Minimoys with the sword.

Princess Selenia thrusts the sword back into the stone in the hope that Arthur will visit again in ten moons as promised.

Reviews

For the Lexicon of International Films , Arthur and the Minimoys was an "overloaded 3D fantasy animation framed by a real-life storyline, which mainly suffers from the hasty handling of adventurous tests and the illogical breaks that go with them." Cinema drew the conclusion : "In terms of content, not very original, but all the more perfectly staged family entertainment at Hollywood level."

According to Prisma, Luc Besson is telling “a fantasy story that shamelessly makes use of common genre works and hardly has an idea of its own”. Also filmstarts.de noticed that Besson too much on ideas from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids , "the Harry Potter universe" and his science fiction film The Fifth Element have resorted. Nevertheless, "coupled with Besson's own wealth of ideas [...] the result is still a fun journey."

Kino.de, on the other hand, describes the film as "an extremely original and creative combination of real and animation worlds, science fiction and action elements as well as lots of humor".
