The Lady is a biopic by filmmaker Luc Besson about the life of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi , who was under house arrest for 15 years for political reasons, and about her tragic marriage.
The film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2011, and opened in Germany on April 5, 2012.
background
Michelle Yeoh brought this project to Luc Besson because she valued him for directing films about strong women before. Luc Besson accepted the project, but frankly admitted certain doubts as to whether he could have done such a script at the age of 25.
During filming, it became known that Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest had just been lifted. Michelle Yeoh was even allowed to visit.
Even though she was always petite, Michelle Yeoh still lost weight for the role. When asked about her commitment to this film, she described it as an "incredible love story" against the backdrop of political turmoil.
reception
Paris Match endorsed the leading actress' assessment, ruling that it was an extraordinary love story between Aung San Suu Kyi's late husband Michael Aris and a woman who sacrificed her personal happiness for her people.
In 2012 the film received the Cinema for Peace , an international film award for human rights in collaboration with Amnesty International and the Human Rights Film Network.
