Top Spin describes a type of amusement ride that has been built by HUSS Maschinenfabrik (now Huss Rides ) from Bremen since 1990 . Since then, it has often been found in various versions as a transportable version at public festivals or permanently installed in amusement parks.
The name Top Spin is derived from the topspin shot in tennis , in which the ball rotates quickly around the axis perpendicular to it after the shot .
function
In a top spin, the passengers sit in a gondola that is approx. 10 meters wide in the standard version and is suspended freely between two support arms. The support arms are driven by electric motors and are mounted on two wide side stands . Counterweights are attached to the arms opposite the gondola suspension.
The gondola can only be locked or released by pneumatic brakes attached to the pivot point in a circle . When the brakes are released, passengers and spectators can hear a typical hissing sound. By applying the brakes, the gondola can roll over at the maximum driving height. When the brakes are released in certain driving positions and the arms are rotated at the same time, the gondola rollover in its axis of rotation.
A travel program consists of various sequences of raising , rocking and rolling over the passenger carrier.
Most top spins have water fountains in the front area with which the passengers can be wetted during the journey, or with which they can at least spray up to just in front of the body. Some stationary systems also use fire effects.
The ride is either controlled directly by the staff or by an automatic driving program. In amusement parks in particular, a fixed program is the usual operating mode in order to ensure that the driving sequence is always the same. Experienced machine operators can, with a bit of skill, achieve several gondola overturns in a row by first fixing the gondola at its highest point and then gradually turning both side arms after releasing the gondola brakes in order to gain momentum for the next rollover.
The passengers are secured against falling out of their seats by shoulder straps that close and lock hydraulically controlled. In addition, another securing device between the legs fixes the bracket.
Passengers must generally be at least 10 years old and have a height of at least 140 cm and a maximum of 195 cm.
When driving, relatively high g-forces occur due to the rotation of the gondola in a confined space, although only a speed of approx. 30 km / h is reached.
Executions
The standard version of the Top Spin (also called Top Spin 1) from 1990 offers space for 40 passengers in two rows and is 18 meters high. In the portable version, it takes up a floor space of approx. 19 × 19 meters and has a connection value of approx. 160 kW. Characteristic for the Top Spin 1 are the columns to the right and left of the masts, which contain large water tanks. Since 1993, a smaller version called Top Spin 2 , with 28 seats and 12 meters high, has also been offered. A larger version, the Giant Top Spin, has space for 77 passengers in three rows and is 20.75 meters high. This version was previously only available as a stationary system, was only produced once and is no longer produced.
A particularly unusual version is the Top Spin Suspended , in which a maximum of 38 passengers sit back to back and where the legs hang freely during the journey. This construction has been found eight times around the world so far. The first in Europe was opened in May 2007 in Phantasialand as Talocan with a Mexican theme. "The Crypt" from the American amusement park "Kings Dominion" is similar. Water and fire effects are also used here, but the entire cladding is missing. So far, the Top Spin ride has been offered in five different variations by the manufacturer Huss Rides .

Various other manufacturers have copied the concept and sell similar rides under different names.
Mondial from the Netherlands produced (at least: in 1994, one topic was: River Splash) the type Roll Over , which has independently rotating support arms as a major change. For this purpose, the column on the right in the view is inclined inwards, the right support arm has an articulated joint near the axis. The gondola is suspended from the arms by a universal joint at both ends that run up at an angle . 32 passengers sit with their heads close to this suspension axis, back to back in pairs, looking sideways from the gondola. A roll over from Mondial was in Fort Fun Adventure Land (D) from 1996-2005 , but the people sitting with them were looking in the axial direction of the gondola. With a different design, Splash Over (a theme: Cliffhanger) by Mondial has two Y-shaped, rigid support arms, which each have about 45 ° two freely rotating seats in one row, about 20 passengers who come out of the gondola from the side and - if upright - upright - look towards the audience.

Top Spin 1
There are currently four transportable Top Spin 1s operated by showmen traveling in Germany.
- Top Spin No. 1 , Bausch (D) (premiere 1990; first built system / prototype)
- Top Spin , Ludewigt (D) (Premiere 1992)
- Revolution , Kinzler-Nickel (D) (Premiere 1991; but from 1995 with a new central section)
- Top Spin fresh , Zehle (D) (Premiere 1993; under Franz Goetzke)
Since 1990 a total of ten different Top Spin 1 systems have been on the road in Germany. One of the best-known Top Spin 1s was “Colorado Rafting” by the Bruch-Schneider company, which was sold to South Africa in 1999 to the Gold Reef City theme park in Johannesburg, where it was completely redesigned. The Ludewigt showman family from Oldenburg even traveled with four Top Spin 1s.
Top Spin 2
There are currently a Top Spin 2 in Germany and one in Switzerland on the way. They are operated by showmen (hereinafter referred to as the company headquarters).
- Top Spin No. 2 , Langhoff from Plettenberg (D) (premiere 2001; youngest Top Spin 2 on the trip)
- Top Spin , Buser AG from Zurich (CH)
A total of nine different Top Spin 2 systems have been on the road in Germany since 1993.

Accidents
In February 2017, at Fengdu Chaohua Culture Park in China, a 14-year-old girl fell from a gondola of a Top Spin-like ride after she was able to hold onto the bottom edge of the rotating gondola with both hands for seconds. She was then taken to a hospital, where she died a short time later. Inspectors checked the facility and found out that the accident was caused by a broken seat belt. In December, the system was only routinely checked and no safety deficiencies were found. After the accident, the park had agreed to pay compensation of 870,000 yuan to the parents. The ride is a “Space Travel BNST-20B Ride” from the Chinese manufacturer Beston Amusement Equipment . After the accident, similar rides from the same manufacturer in other amusement parks had to remain closed until an inspection took place.
