Joaquim Danés i Torras (born June 8, 1888 in Olot ; † February 11, 1960 ibid.) Was a Catalan doctor and regional historian who intensively examined and presented the history of his hometown Olot.

Career and lifetime achievement

Danés began studying medicine at the University of Barcelona in 1904 as a member of a long-established family of doctors from the Garrotxa . Here he studied with professors such as Bartomeu Robert, Jaume Pi Sunyer and Miquel Àngel Fargas, who stood for a renewal of Catalan medicine. He graduated in 1910. In 1912 he received his doctorate with the thesis Cirugía de la tuberculosis pulmonar . (Surgical treatments for pulmonary tuberculosis) at the University of Madrid .

In 1914 he settled in Olot as an independent doctor. A year earlier, he was a co-founder of the Olot County Doctors Association , an association that represented partly union and partly scientific objectives. Its main goal was to improve scientific work opportunities in the Olot district (Catalan: comarca ). Since 1914 Danés worked parallel to his activity as a medic in the local research of Olot and the Garrotxa. This interest in historical research arose seamlessly from his great interest in the history of medicine. In 1924 he became a member of the Association of Museums and Libraries of Olot ( La junta del Museu-Biblioteca d'Olot ), of which he later became director. He later also headed the Olot City Archives.

Following his research interest in tuberculosis, he developed an artificial pneumothorax for therapeutic purposes. In 1915 he became a doctor at the Hospital Sant Jaume in Olot. Because of his constant efforts to achieve social balance, he was sent as a member of the Junta Directiva del Col·legi de Metges de Girona ( Girona Medical Association). In 1931 he became the city health inspector. During the Civil War he was in charge of surgery at Sant Jaume Hospital in Olot. In 1939, at the end of the war, Danés went into exile in France . In December 1940 he returned to Olot, was denounced and thereupon Franco supporters detained him in Girona until 1942 . While in custody he wrote a broad history of the city of Olot in Catalan. When Danés was released from prison in 1942, he was strictly forbidden to work as a doctor for life. Five years later, on the intervention of the President of the Medical Association of Girona, Dr. Sambol i Casanovas withdrawn. Danés worked as a surgeon until he retired in 1958. However, he was unable to regain any of his previous medical leadership positions.

From the Història d'Olot only parts of the oldest and ancient history of Olot were initially published in Spanish. From 1977 to 2001 the city of Olot posthumously published this work in the original Catalan language in 31 volumes. As a historian and local researcher, Danés worked intensively with the press, in which he published numerous articles on the history of the city of Olot. From 1937 he published the Pretèrits olotins (Past Events of Olot). In 1955 he published the Llibre d'Olot (Book of Olot), which made the scattered Pretèrits olotins accessible again in a single place. His most important work remained the 31-volume history of the city of Olot. He devoted the last years of his life to the management of the museum, library and archive of the city of Olot.
