The Football Oberliga Nord 1987/88 was the fourteenth season of the third-rate Oberliga Nord run by the North German Football Association .
Second division relegated Eintracht Braunschweig became champions and qualified like runner-up VfL Wolfsburg for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga . There the Braunschweiger took second place in the northern group and returned to the 2nd division after a year of absence. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, came in fifth and remained in the top division.
Third-placed VfB Oldenburg took part in the German amateur championship final, where the team lost to Eintracht Trier on penalties in the final at the Donnerschwee stadium at home .
TSR Olympia Wilhelmshaven and Atlas Delmenhorst were relegated to one of the subordinate leagues . As a result of the promotion from Eintracht Braunschweig to the 2nd Bundesliga, in return for the following season, VfL Herzlake and TuS Hoisdorf and SFL Bremerhaven also moved up to the Oberliga Nord.
