In 1988 he moved to SG Wattenscheid 09 . "Ede", who often struggled with injuries, never made it into the top team in the long run, but turned out to be a versatile midfield all-rounder who had been active for Wattenscheid for a total of eight years. Here he only narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga in 1989 when the 09ers only played a draw against 1. FC Saarbrücken on the last match day and had to give the SV Darmstadt 98 team the go ahead because of the two goals worse goal difference .

The longed-for promotion to the first Bundesliga came in 1990 when Wattenscheid qualified directly with second place. Buckmaier was part of the team when SG Wattenscheid had its strongest sporting phase so far. Among other things, they made it to the quarter-finals in the DFB Cup in 1991 . He was also on the field on April 2, 1993 when they defeated FC Bayern Munich 2-0 at their home game . Overall, they won three draws and two wins in the eight Bundesliga matches against the record champions. He played his last game as a professional on September 29, 1995 when he played against MSV Duisburg (0-2). He then played in the amateur area for black and white food and red and white Leithe.

After his career, Eduard Buckmaier worked as a coach, initially for many years as a player coach in Leithe; from 2008 to May 2011 he coached the first team of the national league team SW Wattenscheid 08. Since summer 2013 as a rehab and physical trainer for SG Wattenscheid 09. He still plays in the traditional Wattenscheid team.
