The Oberliga Südwest 1987/88 was the tenth season of the third-rate league.

The 1. FSV Mainz 05 was champion and qualified for the promotion round to 2. Bundesliga , where they group winners of the southern group were and ascended. In the German amateur championship final round, Eintracht Trier took part, who became German amateur champions after penalties against VfB Oldenburg. The clubs Eintracht Bad Kreuznach and SSV Überherrn were relegated to the association leagues. In return, the amateurs of 1. FC Saarbrücken (Saar) , SV Edenkoben (Southwest) and VfB Wissen (Rhineland) rose as the respective association league champions for the following season.
