|
The 1985/86 season of the Oberliga Südwest was the 8th season of the Oberliga Südwest since its reintroduction in 1978 . At that time, the Oberliga was the third highest division in Germany after the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga . Wormatia Worms secured the championship one point ahead of FSV Salmrohr . Since the Wormatia did not receive a license for the 2nd Bundesliga due to late submission of documents, the FSV Salmrohr was allowed to participate in the promotion round, in which it was finally able to secure promotion to the second highest division.
The relegation ranks were occupied by Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde and TuS Mayen .
The climbers were the SV Edenkoben from the Association League Southwest , the SV Leiwen from the Rhineland League and the SSV Überherrn from the Association League Saar . There were no relegated teams from the 2nd Bundesliga that could be assigned to the Oberliga Südwest.

On the evening of May 16, 1985 Wormatia Worms secured in front of 7,500 spectators with a 4-0 home win, the seventh win in a row, over Hassia Bingen the championship in the Oberliga Südwest. In the further course of the evening, the news spread that the Rheinhessen had been refused the license for the 2nd Bundesliga and thus also the participation in the promotion round due to incomplete documents. Instead, the Wormatia took part in the German amateur championship in 1986 and was eliminated in the semi-finals against the eventual winner.

As a consequence of the refused license, the resignation of the first chairman Wolfgang Sitter, who was succeeded by Helmut Rödler, was recorded in the week after the championship. Despite the great disappointment within the team - "We didn't understand the world anymore, actually wanted to hang up our football boots." - Wormatia remained largely intact due to the bond with coach Heiner Ueberle. Only the two best goal scorers Dieter Gutzler (SV Darmstadt 98) and Martin Simonis (FV Speyer) had to be replaced by Uwe Eckel (Amicitia Viernheim) and Bernd Nathmann (SV Sandhausen). So the Worms succeeded in the following season, in which they only failed because of the worse goal difference compared to Eintracht Trier, to play for a long time for the southwest championship.

Because Wormatia Worms was denied participation in the promotion round, the runner-up of the Oberliga Südwest moved up. Second place was won by FSV Salmrohr on the last day of the match with a 6-0 away win at ASC Dudweiler. Since competitor Eintracht Trier "only" won their home game against the Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde 5-0, the sixth Salmrohrer goal in Dudweiler, scored by Klaus Toppmöller, was decisive in the fight for the runner-up championship. Over the entire season, Toppmöller was the FSV's most successful goalscorer with 22 goals. In the 1985/86 promotion round , the Salmtal team met TSV 1860 Munich , Kickers Offenbach and SSV Ulm 1846 .

With 8: 4 points and 10: 7 goals, Salmrohr took second place in this group, securing promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. The decisive factor was a 2: 2 after 0: 2 deficit in the home game against Kickers Offenbach on matchday five. With this draw it was guaranteed that Salmrohr could not be displaced from second place on the last day of the promotion round. Bernd Hölzenbein remembers this game as follows:
“The game was in Salmrohr and the FSV still needed one point to make the promotion perfect. I've been in Salmrohr since the winter break, but couldn't play for months. Offenbach led 2-0, I came in a few minutes before the end - and Offenbach was now really nervous. Somehow we made it 2-2 shortly before the end - that was enough. I didn't have any contact with the ball, I think. I was there at the promotion ceremony, even if I didn't have a part. "
The home games of the FSV Salmrohr in the promotion round followed a total of 16,500 spectators, which corresponds to an average of 5,500 spectators. More than five times as many as in the regular season (917). After the successful promotion, the team, which was supplemented by Michael Kaul and Norbert Rolshausen, among others, had no chance and had to return to the Oberliga Südwest as bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga 1986/87 .
