Oberliga Südwest 1987/88
2nd Bundesliga 1988/89

The Oberliga Südwest 1988/89 was the eleventh season of the third-class league.

The newly promoted SV Edenkoben became champions and qualified for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , in which they clearly missed promotion in the southern group with only one win and one draw. As in the previous year, Eintracht Trier took part in the German amateur championship final, which was able to repeat its success from the previous year after a penalty shoot-out against SpVgg Bad Homburg and became German amateur champion. Since 1. FSV Mainz 05 , who had been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the previous season , was relegated to the Oberliga by return of post, there were four relegation places. Accordingly, the clubs SpVgg EGC Wirges , VfB Wissen , SV Rot-Weiß Hasborn-Dautweiler and SV Viktoria Herxheim had to relegate to the association leagues. In return, the FSG Schiffweiler (Saar) , SV Geinsheim (southwest) and TuS Mayen (Rhineland) rose as the respective association league champions for the following season. The season goes down as one of the most memorable in the history of the Oberliga Südwest. With the ambitious SV Edenkoben, a promoted champion became a champion whose triumphant advance was only stopped in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga. The relegation battle was unbeatable in tension and was only decided on the last day of the game, with no less than 11 teams involved. In the end, eight-placed Borussia from Neunkirchen only separated one point from relegation position 15. Between SV Leiwen and SpVgg EGC Wirges, in the event of a tie and the same goal difference, the number of goals scored even decided on relegation or relegation.
