history

Edenkoben was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 769 as Zothingowe (n) . In the 16th century it passed to the electorate Palatinate Palatinate , to which it belonged until the late 18th century. In 1541 the first water pipe was laid in Edenkoben.

Almost 20 years later, in 1560, the place received the right to hold markets.

After the French Revolution , Edenkoben was from 1802 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , the seat of the canton of the same name , to which 24 other municipalities belonged, and formed its own mairie . In 1815 the place had 3,560 inhabitants. In the same year, Austria was struck. Then the place changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 Edenkoben was part of the Landau Landau commissioner , which was then converted into a district office. There had been municipal suffrage in Edenkoben since 1818. Between 1846 and 1852, King Ludwig I built the Villa Ludwigshöhe Palace as the summer residence of the Bavarian kings. The importance of Edenkoben can be seen in the construction of a "royal" train station, which was destroyed 90 years later in an air raid in January 1945 towards the end of the Second World War. In 1862 the Ludwigsstift hospital was built with the support of King Ludwig I. Another step into modern times was the electrification of Edenkoben through the construction of an electricity plant.

From 1939 the place was part of the Landau district in the Palatinate . After the Second World War , the city became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . Edenkoben gained importance in 1954 through the establishment of the finance school (today the college for finance and state finance school) and the establishment of the sports school of the Southwest German Football Association. The same year saw the construction of the first (and so far only) Palatinate chairlift . During the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform moved Edenkoben in the newly created on June 7, 1969 the district Landau-Bad Bergzabern, in 1978 in South County Wine Trail is renamed . Three years later, the city became the also newly formed association of the same name . The preliminary conclusion in the city history of Edenkoben is the receipt of a motorway connection between 1986 and 1990.
