August croissant
August Croissant (born February 6, 1870 in Edenkoben , † January 14, 1941 in Landau in the Palatinate ) was a German painter and draftsman.
life and work
He was born as the son of the tüncher Zacharias Croissant (1833–1901) and his second wife Anna Philippine. Michel (1838–1876) was born in Edenkoben in the Palatinate and also learned his father's profession. A passion for art painting developed early on. August Croissant first attended the arts and crafts school in Kaiserslautern , then in Nuremberg . Finally he went to Munich, where he made his living with decorative painting, but also continued to receive professional training. Croissant became known with the painters Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) and Franz von Lenbach (1836–1904), who both influenced him artistically.
Initially caught up in Art Nouveau art , August Croissant found ever greater pleasure in landscapes, cityscapes and village scenes, especially those of his immediate Palatinate homeland and his Bavarian homeland in general. He created a large number of related paintings, watercolors and drawings, which made him one of the most famous local Palatinate painters. Associations, companies and publishers often commissioned him with illustrations, and some of his motifs were also transferred to postcards. He also made the first drafts of the Palatinate flag around 1909 .
August Croissant was married to Emilie geb. Schardein (1873-1967) and lived with his family in Landau (Palatinate), where he also died in 1941. There the August-Croissant-Straße is named after him. His son Eugen Croissant (1898–1976) also gained fame as a painter.
