Flowing waters

history
The name Kohlplatz results from the location of coal piles in the Middle Ages. A knight's stone commemorates a retreat by the Schladen battalion under Major von Borck in the first coalition war on July 13, 1794. This is related to the fighting at Steigerkopf , where French revolutionary troops and Prussian troops faced each other during the conquest of the part of the Electoral Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine . As a reminder, the Schänzelturm was built there in 1894 on the 100th anniversary .
Hiking and refuges
The Kohlplatz is a central junction ( path spider ) in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park , which can be reached on hiking trails from the north from the Edenkoben Valley and from the south from the Modenbach Valley. The Kesselberg ( 661.8 m ) can be climbed as the closest peak . Hiking trails lead past the Kesselberg to Benderplatz ( 565.5 m ) and further over the Steigerkopf ( 613.6 m ) with the Schänzelturm to the forester's house Heldenstein or Lolosruhe ( 573.8 m ). The Frankenberg ( 556.6 m ) with the remains of the Frankenburg on the Frankenfelsen can also be reached. The Amicitia Hut and the Edenkobener Hut at the Hüttenbrunnen are managed shelters by the Palatinate Forest Association . A few hundred meters south of Kohlplatz is the Nellohütte of the hiking club Nello e. V.
