Schänzelturm (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Schänzelturm

The Schänzelturm is a 13 m high observation tower built in 1874 on the Steigerkopf near Edenkoben in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Südliche Weinstraße and at the same time the highest tower in the low mountain range of the Palatinate Forest .

Geographical location

The tower stands in the east of the Palatinate Forest in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park on the Steigerkopf ( 613.6  m above sea  level ), the summit of which, together with the tower location, is part of an exclave of the municipality of Gommersheim .

architecture

The octagonal tower is 13 m high and was built from red sandstone . The building is divided into two parts. On the mightier lower part it has an outside staircase that leads to a platform about 5 m high. In the slimmer upper part of the tower, to which a door leads from the platform and which has narrow, loopholed windows, there is an internal staircase. The viewing platform on the tower roof is secured by a railing. Depending on the height of the surrounding forest, the view options may be limited.

history

In the German national exuberance after the victory in the Franco-German War (1870/71), the Schänzelturm was built in 1874. In 1894 he became

"In memory of the brave Prussian warriors who died here in the battle against the French invasion army on July 13, 1794 for the German fatherland "

Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of a battle. When French revolutionary troops conquered the part of the Electoral Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine , a Prussian contingent opposed them - unsuccessfully - on the slopes of the Steigerkopf . Because the Prussians had built smaller entrenchments on the mountain slope , the Steigerkopf is also popularly known as Schänzel ; the name of the tower is derived from this.
