The Lederstrumpfbrunnen is a fountain in the center of the town of Edenkoben in the Palatinate . It is reminiscent of Johann Adam Hartmann from this city , who is considered one of the models for the fictional character Leather Stocking by the American writer James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851).
Johann Adam Hartman emigrated to North America in 1764, became known as a trapper and took part in the fighting in the American War of Independence from 1775 to 1783 . The fountain shows him as a hunter with a shotgun in hand, with a dog by his side and a hunted wood grouse . The fountain also shows the Indian Chingachgook, a character from the Coopers novel. In front of the two is the figure of Max Slevogt (1868–1932), who created some of the most famous leather stocking illustrations and who lived in the Palatinate for a long time.
The fountain was donated by the local savings bank and designed by the sculptor Gernot Rumpf between 1987 and 1990 .
